Nanoparticle trapping with plasmonic fibre cavites

Awarded: NOK 60,000

New tools are necessary to manipulate objects on the nano-scale. It is far from obvious to pick up a nanowire and put it next to the transistor it should be connected to, even if you don't have big fingers. Optical waveguides have proven useful to trap an d propel nanowires, as Hellesø's work has demonstrated over the last few years. In this project, two different approaches to trapping nanoparticles with optical fibres will be coordinated and the co-operation will be of mutual benefit. Tapered optical fib res can be used to trap nanoparticles and position them in three dimensions, for characterisation, sorting or as building blocks. While Hellesø will focus on using a single fibre, Fick will focus on the use of two fibres. The aim is to develop the two met hods into tools for precise positioning of nanoparticles, for applications in nanotechnology and nanobiotechnology. It may be possible to use the methods to trap and characterize single viruses and strands of DNA. The co-operation will give an opportunit y to work together in an international environment. In addition to the PIs, post-doc Jean-Claude Tinguely and MSc-student Petter Brox will participate from Norway and a PhD-student will participate from France.
