A New Transport Framework for the Internet

Awarded: NOK 50,000

The goal of this project is to start work on the design of an Internet transport-layer system underneath a protocol-independent API, that builds on the currently standardised transport technology, and that picks the best available transport protocols for a given application. Such a system should embody functionality like: ensuring downwards compatibility with legacy end-points, signaling of available protocols between transport end-points, and easing the traversal of middleboxes that block new transport p rotocols. The project is a collaboration between a Norwegian and a French team of researchers, involving a total of 7 researchers for whom short research visits should be funded. Both the French and Norwegian teams have a strong expertise on Internet tr ansport-layer and congestion control issues, but they also bring each specialist knowledge and experience on particular aspects of the project. The ANT project will thus offer both partners a formal framework to bootstrap and sustain a long-term collabora tion. This will reinforce our current research efforts in the field of Internet protocols, not only from an academic standpoint (publications), but also in terms of both departments' increasing focus on standards-related activities (IETF).
