Virtual Prototyping of Maritime Systems and Operations

Awarded: NOK 12.0 mill.

The scope of the ViProMa project is to introduce simulation based work processes in the maritime industry; develop knowledge, methodology and software that will enable optimization of overall system performance of merchant ships, advanced offshore vessels and integrated operations - rather than optimizing performance of individual components. The primary project objective is to develop an open, standardized framework and architecture for system simulation and virtual prototyping, which will be a new platf orm for product development, training and cooperation in the maritime industry. Final status as per end of December 2016: WP1 - Virtual prototyping framework A first version of the framework prototype has been developed, including a distributed simulation bus. The framework has been tested in WP3, and a paper is being written around this. The framework has been published on the web (www.viproma.no). WP2 - Domain modelling There has now been developed several domain models which have been tested towards the framework from WP1. WP3 - Demonstrators This activity was started in 2015. Meetings have been arranged with industry partners, in which demonstrator cases were defined. The first demonstrators were finished early 2016, and the results and experience from the testing together with the industry partners are very positive. Case reports have been written, summarizing the results.

The scope of the ViProMa project is to introduce simulation-based work processes in the maritime industry; develop knowledge, methodology and software that will enable optimization of overall system performance of merchant ships, advanced offshore vessels and integrated operations - rather than optimizing performance of individual components. The primary project objective is to develop an open, standardized framework and architecture for system simulation and virtual prototyping, which will be a new pla tform for product development, training and cooperation in the maritime industry. Secondary objectives include (1) Technology investigation and knowledge transfer from other related industries such as automotive and aviation; (2) Develop a common framewo rk, system model and interface standards; (3) Develop generic models for all key structures, parts and equipment of ships and offshore vessels; (4) Propose standardized performance measures, operational profiles and operational scenarios for design benchm arks within the Virtual Prototyping Framework; and (5) Develop industry demonstrator. The results from the ViProMa project - including future IPN and commercial follow-up projects, development of commercial software, etc. - will generate new collaborati on arenas and allow for more efficient work processes. This will eventually accelerate innovation, reduce costs and time to market. The output of the project is 1 PhD, 1 post.docs and at least 10 MSc candidates. The project will be carried out in close c ollaboration with the Norwegian maritime industry.
