ECCSEL Norway CCS RI - Phase 1

Awarded: NOK 50.0 mill.

Global warming caused by anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions is possibly the most severe environmental challenge facing the world today. Carbon Capture and Storage offers a route to reduce these emissions and help mitigate the presently uncontrolled global temperature rise. The European Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage Laboratory Infrastructure (ECCSEL) is one of 44 proposals for new large European research infrastructures as identified by the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) that was posted on the ESFRI Roadmap in 2008. In 2011, the EU funded and NTNU led ECCSEL Preparatory Phase 1 project (2011-2012) was started with 15 partners from 10 countries across Europe. Three working groups were established to work on: Legal and governance structure, Infrastructure development plan and Financial strategy. Most of these documents are now finalized. During ECCSEL Preparatory Phase 2 (2013-2014), the Business plan for ECCSEL will be finalized so ECCSEL can be in fully operation as a pan-European distributed RI from 2015. ECCSEL NORWAY CCS RI is the Norwegian node of ECCSEL and in the present application for Phase 1 aims at gathering all Norwegian laboratories working on CCS in one integrated research infrastructure with excellence, relevance and complementarity as key issues. ECCSEL NORWAY CCS RI Phase 1 will provide a laboratory infrastructure that will promote researcher mobility and collaboration, initially within Norway, but from 2015 integrated with European partners and open for researchers from the rest of the world. It is important to start the work with new and extended infrastructures in 2014 in order to be operative with as much as possible by 2015.
