Aktiv brukermedvirkning for bedre høreapparattilpasning

Awarded: NOK 5.3 mill.

The ABRUMED project has developed and tested a support system to be used at hearing clinics for individual fitting of hearing aids. The system assists the hearing aid user and the audiologist in assessing the hearing problem in detail and improve verification of settings to achieve an optimal fit. The system has two modules. Module 1 is a sound-environment simulator which recreates common but challenging sound scenarios across the sound spectrum. A standard 5:1 sound system is used and measurements in real environments and in the laboratory, shows a great level of accuracy and realism. Examples are traffic noise (deep sounds) and dining areas (sharp sounds). The simulator has a large graphical user interface on a table-mounted multitouch-screen where the hearing aid user and the audiologist seamlessly can start, extend and swap between sound scenarios to create one that provokes the specific challenges of the user. The simulator is an important tool to communicate in detail where the problem is located, something that is hard to achieve with todays practice, which is based on conversations in a quiet room. Module 2 is a graphical user interface for fine-tuning of specific parameters in the hearing aid, e.g. amplification of specific areas in the spectrum. This is integrated with the simulator to enable the user him-/herself to adjust the parameters while being supervised by the audiologist. This enables the user to find the optimal (subjective) fit with great precision. Laboratory trials show that the system enables the user to better communicate the perceived hearing problem and find optimal settings in collaboration with the audiologist. This gives a better result as compared to the traditional method where the audiologist fits the hearing aid mainly based on objective measurements (audiogram). The system concept, R&D methods, and the results from the laboratory trials are published in several international conference proceedings and scientific journals.
