Ocean Acidification in the Arctic: effects of ice

Awarded: NOK 0.79 mill.

CARSIC will develop basic knowledge through studies related to process understanding of Arctic Ocean biogeochemistry and ocean acidification: aiming to estimate future carbonate system parameters state in the Arctic Ocean. We plan to work on a database, perform field studies in Svalbard, and make an intercallibration work. CARSIC promotes international research cooperation and exchange of new knowledge as it involves scientist from Russia and Norway, and reinforces Norway position as a leading nation in marine ecosystem related research. The applied project will increase the understanding of the fate and effect of increased ocean CO2 in relation to the ice dynamics. This is an important knowledge necessary for predictions of the role of polar oceans in t he global carbon cycle.
