This project involves the novel application of anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) to examine deformation within glacier ice. Preliminary results have demonstrated that AMS can provide reliable and useful fabric data from glacier basal ice, reveal ing new information about glacial strain. In this project, the technique will be used to investigate three surge type or suspected surge type glaciers in Svalbard in order to develop the application of this technique, examine the origin and evolution of s tructures within the ice and test the processes occurring during glacial surges in Svalbard and thus advance our understanding of surging glaciers.
