Investigating movement strategies of Svalbard reindeer in space and time, RiS ID 3525

Awarded: NOK 50,299

Little is known of the range use of Svalbard reindeer. It is debated if seasonal migration occurs and if food restriction by snow and icing result in larger and more variable home ranges in winter than summer. Moreover the effect of individual attributes such as age and calving status on these patterns remains unknown. Here we will investigate this by using spatial data from 36 GPS-marked female reindeer in the Colesdalen-Reindalen area of Svalbard. The work is implemented in two separate master theses at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences.
