Investigation of Crevasse Evolution, Calving Occurrence, and Links to Damage (ICECOLD), RiS ID 6155

Iceberg calving is an important component of glacier mass loss and indirectly contributes to sea level rise. A new iceberg calving law was recently proposed based on damage mechanics, a promising new theory that could greatly improve the ability of ice s heet models to predict the response of glaciers to changing climate and ocean circulation patterns. The purpose of this AFG is to fund supplemental field work to the CRIOS (Calving Rates and Impact on Sea Level) project to test and refine the new damage mechanics calving model. The combined efforts of CRIOS-ICECOLD will establish a dataset unmatched in the world for testing, comparing, and calibrating existing and future calving models.
