The basic allowance would in its entirety be used to pay salaries of technical and administrative personnel required to fulfil the goals of the Centre for Neural Computation. This includes office personnel as well as staff engineers with skills in electro nics, computer networks, programming, histology, molecular biology, animal husbandry, veterinary functions, health and security, and outreach activities. None of the members of the support staff work on specific projects, yet their contributions are essen tial for the realization of the objectives of the new Centre. The basic allowance was visualized as a key element of the Centre in the proposal to the Research Council. An annual allowance of 12.5 MNOK or more would enable us to spend the Centre funding o n specific research goals instead of using it to cover support functions for which it is difficult to achieve funding from regular sources.
