ELSA Norway network

Awarded: NOK 0.60 mill.

ELSA-Norway is a project financed by the Research Council of Norway to enhance cooperation between ELSA researchers and serve as a forum for information and discussion within the field. The project is hosted by Program for Applied Ethics, NTNU. The need for such a network was confirmed in a conference held in Oslo, December 4th - 5th 2012. The conference was research initiated, inviting Norwegian ELSA researchers, Research Council officials and the Norwegian ELSA board to reflection on future orientations and strategic actions of ELSA research in Norway. The ELSA Norway initiative was encouraged by the fact that the dialogue between researchers proved rewarding and productive. Because ELSA researchers work in different places and are trained in different disciplines measures should be taken to help identify, build and maintain ELSA research competence in Norway. The ELSA Norway project has established a national steering committee and has focused on three activities. 1) To establish and maintain a web page as an information and communication tool. To 2) stimulate scholarly interaction within ELSA communities by funding local and national ELSA activities. And 3) arrange a national conference(see https://www.ntnu.edu/elsa). The national steering committee has been responsible for allocation of funding for local arrangement, profile of webpage and national conference. ELSA Norway have run a webpage, announced funding for arrangement and arranged a conference 16-17 September as planned. The network continues focusing on the webpage and arranging national conferences.

This project aims at establishing and coordinating a sustainable network of ELSA researchers in Norway: ELSA Norway. This initiative builds on a national conference of ELSA researchers held in Oslo December 2012. We apply for 300 k NOK/year for 2013 and 2 014 to enhance cooperation between ELSA researchers and serve as a forum for information and discussion within the field. A national network committee of representatives from the four main universities and associated institutions will be established, and ELSA Norway will be coordinated from the Program for applied ethics at NTNU. The project will in its initial phase give priority to setting up a web site aiming at creating a catalog of ELSA researcher and projects as well as providing an information cha nnel for ELSA activates. The project will in parallel set up guidelines and procedures for applications for financial support of ELSA activities. The task of the national committee will be to a) represent local communities b)supervise and support the d esign and content of the web site and c)develop and approve guidelines and procedures as well as allocations. The members of the committee hold permanent positions and have been appointed locally through local institutions like GenØk, SVT and SME. We a pply for funding of ELSA activities made available through open calls (300 k NOK), work force to establish and maintain a web page (135k NOK), a national conference (120 k) and other administrative expenses (45K NOK). The Program for applied ethics will c ontribute with the necessary man-hours for coordination of the network (100k NOK).
