Norwegian Center for Stem Cell Research 2014-2018

Awarded: NOK 26.1 mill.

This application lays out a strategic plan for the Norwegian Center for Stem Cell Research for the period 2014-2018. The Center has therefore developed a four-pronged strategy with 2 translational and 2 basic science arms, with the following areas of emph asis: Clinical trials using human somatic stem cells. Using induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS cells) from Norwegian patients to generate in vitro disease models to investigate disease mechanisms. Develop advanced and innovative cellular and molecula r toolkits for a penetrating characterization and validation of stem cells for research and clinical use. Utilize high-power functional imaging methodologies to characterize and validate stem cells for research and clinical use. Together these provid e an interlocking platform with innovative elements that will help ensure a comprehensive characterization and validation of stem cells in the context of clinical treatment of disease. It will also enable the development of in vitro iPS cell-based disease models for elucidating more completely the molecular underpinnings of pathogenetic processes.
