Personal overseas fellowship to support Ph.D. project assessing land-atmosphere coupling strength in South Norway

Awarded: NOK 0.10 mill.

The personal overseas researcher grant will facilitate critical tasks for the accomplishment of the Ph.D. project: Assessing Land-Atmosphere Coupling Strength in a Maritime, Mountainous and Seasonally Snow Covered Climate using the WRF Model. The Ph.D. pr oject has its origins in hydrology and meteorology, funded by the Norwegian Water and Energy Resources Directorate, and carried out in collaboration with the Norwegian Meteorological Institute and Section for environmental geology and hydrology at the Uni versity of Oslo. The overarching goal of the Ph.D. project is to expand on and improve the current knowledge and modelling of land surface processes and their interaction with the lower atmosphere in Norway; and by this contributing to increased confidenc e in weather and flood forecasting, and climate projections. The local coupling strength from the land surface to the planetary boundary layer is assessed by experimental runs using the Weather Research and Forecasting model, a next-generation mesoscale n umerical weather prediction system, co-developed, maintained and supported by the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). The grant will enable Ph.D. student Helene Birkelund Erlandsen to spend a 3 months research visit to NCAR. The visit is host ed by Dr. David Gochis, scientist at the Hydrometeorology Applications Program of NCAR's Research Application Laboritory, instrumental in the development of the newly released WRF-Hydro, a community based modelling coupling framework designed to link mult i-scale process models of the atmosphere and terrestrial hydrology.
