Support from NFR to host the 20th European Conference on Fracture - ECF20

Awarded: NOK 0.25 mill.

After a strong competition, in August 2010 the European Structural Integrity Society (ESIS) council voted Norway to arrange the Twentieth European Conference on Fracture (ECF20), in the first week of July 2014. It is for the first time to be held in Norwa y in the more than 35 years history of European Conference on Fracture. The safety assessment and structural integrity of engineering structures relies critically on the understanding of the fundamental deformation and fracture mechanisms of materials. T hrough its Biennial European Conferences on Fracture, ESIS aims to continuously develop a knowledge base relating to all aspects of Structural Integrity with the objective of improving the safety and performance of engineering structures, components, syst ems and their associated materials. ECF20 will focus on all aspects and scales of fracture and fatigue of engineering materials, components and structures. This ranges from basics to future trends, with special emphasis on multiscale approaches, and app lications to energy materials and challenging environments. ECF20 will feature short courses on fracture modeling and assessment two days before the conference and a panel discussion about how to teach fracture mechanics in the future. The local organize r and national committee of ECF20 involve research scientists from universities, research institutes, and different industries in Norway. The international advisory board comprises of worldwide notable experts in the field. A joint effort will be held to the anticipated success of ECF20, which will not only foster research and collaboration between Norway and other countries but also raise our recognition on the international research society regarding fracture mechanics.
