The relationship between hyperoxia, oxidative stress and decompression sickness

Awarded: NOK 46,292

Decompression sickness (DCS) has been recognized for over a century, with the main challenge being in the production of / generation of vascular gas bubbles as a result of gas coming out of solution upon decompressing from larger pressures than at the sur face. However, challenges still remains as to where the bubbles are formed, and which biological/physiological processes that are being altered as a result of the challenges when man submerges himself/herself in the water. Recently, new findings points at the hyperoxia that the diver is exposed to as a releasing factor/trigger for inflammatory processes that precedes the formation of vascular bubbles/the reactions to the vascular bubbles. The present project will investigate whether the response to hypero xia might be masking a more subtle genetic response to diving and/or DCS by controlling for the hyperoxia during experimental diving.
