ThermaSiC - Thermal spraying of Silicon Carbide

Alternative title: ThermaSiC - Termisk sprøyting av silisiumkarbid

Awarded: NOK 2.9 mill.

Wear and corrosion yearly destroys 1-2% of GDP in the industrialized world. This makes the foundation of a large industry for surface modification and protection of equipment and metal parts. In applications with high wear, ceramic coatings are widely use d, which generally are recognized for being chemically inert, have high hardness, and thermal resistance. The total market for high performance ceramic coatings is estimated to be around $5 billion, and thermal spraying is the deposition method that accou nts for the majority of this market. Silicon Carbide (SiC) is a material with attractive properties towards numerous industry applications. However, up until today, it has not been possible to form coatings of SiC by use of thermal spraying, due to deco mposition of the material in the excessive temperatures present in this process. The outstanding properties of SiC have motivated many to develop methods to thermally spray this material, however no one has succeeded. Our scientists have done a groundbrea king invention which solves this fundamental problem. Still, many questions remain unanswered. For the industry to accept a completely new coating, it is of critical important that all the properties are tested and verified. The objective of the FORNY-pr oject is to optimize all the process steps and perform tests that identifies all product properties according to standards. Further, the purpose is to identify the most attractive applications and collaborate with one or more industrial partners who are w illing to test the coating in a pilot project.
