Bringing "OilShaver" to market II

Alternative title: Vi bringer "OilShaver" til markedet II

Awarded: NOK 0.48 mill.

The OilShaver system is a high speed (>2knots) oil spill collection system that is operated from one vessel without the aid of paravanes or similar spreading devices. It proved its worth during the Wendy Schmidt Oil Spill X Challenge competition where it collected 8,5 tonnes of oil in one minute, and also during the 2012 NOFO Oil-on-Water exercise where it collected 55% of oil allocated in less than 30 minutes. After a setback due to unwise design alterations for the 2013 Oil-on-Water Exercise, OilShav er has now been improved through intensive design and testing in the fall of 2013. Numerous tests with PEH pellets as oil proxy gave recapture rates ranging between 80 and 95%. We have carried out a final test at the Ohmsett test facility at Leonardo, New Jersey, USA with good results, and are now preparing for the NOFO Oil-on-Water Exercise in the North Sea. Having carried out these tests we will spend the fall to launch OilShaver on the world market. Have a look at our newweb pages at http://www.oils haver.com.

The "OilShaver" towed oil spill collection system has been developed over 4 years by Aakrehamn Traalboeteri AS and Husen AS with financial support from NOFO, Innovation Norway, The Norwegian Coastal Administration and The Research Council of Norway. The s ystem has been through tests at Kystverket, Horten, at Ohmsett, New Jersey and during the 2012 and 2013 Oil-On-Water exercises in the North Sea. The Oil-on-Water Exercise 2013 represented a major setback for OilShaver. A design flaw in the collection un it caused a malfunction of the skimmer. Project resources were therefore redirected to mitigate this flaw. We are now carrying out Computational Fluid Dynamics Modelling (Bård Venås, NORCONSULT) to adjust internal flow parameters in the collection unit, a nd will carry out extensive tests to ascertain that the adjusted version will have a functionality equal to or better than the sucessful 2012 version. NOFO - the Norwegian Clean Seas Association for Operating Companies - maintains the operating companies ' oil spill preparedness associated with exploration for and production of oil and gas on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. The purpose of the project coincides with R&D priorities given by OG21 www.og21.org Ref. to document TTA1 table No.8 Oil Spill Res ponse Technologies, concerning need for new solutions to detect, contain and clean up spills, and indicates highest priority for industry and public funding. A successful project backed by NFR and NOFO will have a stamp of quality promoting the commerc ial value of OilShaver world wide. There is also a track record including a good performance in the «Oil Cleanup X-Challenge» http://www.iprizecleanoceans.org/teams/oilshaver, and references to performed tests from ships operated by MSRC(the Marine Spill Response Corporation,USA). The project encompasses providing a tested commercial prototype to be evaluated for approval by NOFO during the 2014 Oil-on-Water Exercise, and to be launched internationally late 2014.
