This project will investigate new and advanced methods of calculation of current carrying capacity (ampacity) and perform experimental work in order to provide new and important knowledge and tools for utility companies to determine the thermal conductivity of power cable trench backfills. In many cases, the ampacity can be increased, since the thermal conductivity in many cases is higher than the tabulated value normally used according to current standards. At locations along the cable route that coincide with other infrastructure, such as roads, railways and district heating, the cable is usually buried in a thermally unfavourable environment. This reduces the ampacity and is referred to as "thermal bottlenecks". In such cases reduction factors are taken from on tables calculated more than 40 years ago, based on simplified model geometries. In many cases these reduction factors are conservative compared to the real ampacity of the cable. Two large full-scale installations have been established to verify numerical calculations of the cable conductor temperature experimentally: at Lyse Elnett in Stavanger (field experiment) and at Tiller (outdoor laboratory) in Trondheim. The measurements include recording of e.g. temperature, humidity, thermal resistivity, weather (wind/ precipitation) along many bottle-necks. In addition small-scale experiments have been executed in the high voltage laboratory, to investigate specific phenomena. The experiments show that there is a large spread in measured thermal conductivity, ranging from 0.7 W/m.K to 1.7 W/m.K while the tabulated value in the standard is 1 W/m.K. The resulting ampacity of the cable can thus be worse or better than the tabulated value. A method that estimates the thermal conductivity in soils have been developed, based on information from the CE-declaration that follows all building materials and measurement of the soil density. An empirical model of thermal conductivity for soils and building materials, developed in Canada, forms the basis of the method. The method has been verified for materials commonly used in cable trenches and provide a valuable tool to provide better estimates of thermal conductivity compared to the tabulated values. A web-based tool for ampacity calculations have been developed in the project, based on finite-element calculations of heat transfer. The calculations are executed on a server, making it possible to do heavy computations on any PC or device connected to the internet. The web-based tool has a graphical user interface that intuitively makes it possible to define the geometry of the cable trench and perform ampacity calculations for complex geometries in a simple manner.
