Mapping individual migration strategies of an Arctic seabird

Awarded: NOK 79,999

The aim of the project is to investigate individual migration strategies and wintering areas in an Arctic seabird. Little information exists on individual flexibility or consistency in migration and wintering strategies of seabirds breeding in Svalbard. S uch information is important for conservation management and for understanding how seabird populations might be influenced by, and respond to, changing conditions on wintering grounds as well as on breeding grounds. This will be studied in Kongsfjorden, S valbard, as a part of the Birdmap project. My project will require several years of individual tracking data, and this will be obtained by performing tracking during my master period on the same individuals that have been previously tracked in the Birdmap project. Hence, it will combine data obtained from previous years with fresh data that I will collect.
