Internal accumulation at Lomonosovfonna glacier: environmental controls and rates, RiS ID 3395

Awarded: NOK 9,654

Proposed field campaign at Lomonosovfonna (1200 and 900 m asl) is planned for April 2014 and continues work started in April 2012. The aim is to derivea dataset on environmental parameters influencing internal accumulation and actual rates of the process. This includes: - Downloading data from grid of thermistor strings and an AWS installed in April 2013 and installation of 2 new similar setups along with a weather station; - Drilling a shallow core for analysis of visual stratigraphy, density and sampli ng for isotopic composition; - Surveing shallow holes at 1200 and ~900 m asl (9 in each case) for stratigraphy with a borehole camera. Combined the datasets will become the basis for an empirically based parameterization of water flow and storage that is to be implemented in a layered englacial model. Derived refreezing rates will be used for verification of the model.
