Svalbard reindeer and hunting - what are natural borders for management units

Awarded: NOK 39,999

Svalbard reindeer are managed within fairly small management units. Local authorities are concerned that reindeer within the small management units may be subjected to overharvesting. In this project I will investigate the range use of individually GPS-ma rked Svalbard reindeer and see if the space use conforms to the management units (MU). In particular I will look at the size of reindeer home ranges relative to size of MA and the exchange rates of individuals in and out of MU, as well as if the rates are dependent on season and reproductive status. This project is a master thesis project at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences.
