ConDiPa - Consumer perspectives, differentiation and diet and physical activity choices

Alternative title: Forbruksperspektiv, differensiering og valg av kosthold og fysisk aktivitet

Awarded: NOK 2.6 mill.

"Consumer perspectives, Differentiation and Diet and Physical Activity choices" (ConDiPa) a consortium of researchers from SIFO, NSSS and HiOA, has participated in the "Determinants of Diet and Physical Activity" Knowledge Hub (DEDIPAC KH), an interdisciplinary European research network with more than 300 researchers from 13 countries. DEDIPAC KH, 2013-2016, was the first pilot of the Joint Programming Initiative (JPI) "A Healthy Diet of a Healthy Life". The aim of DEDIPAC KH was to establish a knowledge hub, harmonize measurement methods and develop a toolbox for monitoring, research and translation of research to policy and practice related to dietary, physical activity and sedentary behaviours. The ConDiPa consortium contributed to DEDIPAC KH with multidisciplinary understanding of cultural determinants of diet and physical activity with a special focus on the impact of migration and and what this might mean for policy and action. The main objectives of ConDiPa were: 1. to generate new knowledge on the impact of migration and social inequalities on diet and physical activity in everyday life; and 2. to participate in DEDIPAC KH, a unique multidisciplinary network that facilitates exchange of expertise and knowledge. With increased migration and more refugees in Europe there is a need for knowledge about the effects of migration on diet and physical activity. ConDiPa has been a member of a research network in DEDIPAC KH that has focused on factors affecting diet, physical activity and sedentary behavior in ethnic minority groups. The network has conducted two literature reviews to identify how ethnicity affects a. dietary behaviour and b. physical activity and sedentary behaviours. A wide range of different factors, especially socio-cultural and religious, were identified, and needs for getting more knowledge about eg how factors interact and how ethnicity affects sedentary behaviors were highlighted. The ConDiPa consortium has participated in several DEDIPAC KH activities. A systematic literature review aimed at eliciting good practice characteristics of interventions and policies promoting healthy diet and physical activity identified 53 good practice characteristics in three domains: 1. intervention / policy design / goals / participant; 2. evaluation; and 3. implementation. To get a better insight into what is needed for successful implementation case studies that examined the implementation and transferability of policy and interventions were conducted in five European countries (Belgium, Ireland, Norway, Poland, Germany). The two Norwegian cases were Keyhole labelling and Free school fruit program. The case studies showed that some of the important factors for successful implementation is the active involvement of stakeholders, staff training, adaptation of material, embedding into existing structures, continued funding and political support. One of the results from DEDIPAC KH is a toolbox (https://www.dedipac.eu/toolbox//) made for policy-makers, researchers and practitioners who want to develop, monitor and/or evaluate a policy or multicomponent intervention on physical activity, sedentary behaviour or dietary behavior.

ConDiPa will participate in DEDIPAC KH, which aims to build a knowledge hub for future monitoring, research and translation of research to policy and practice regarding determinants of dietary, physical activity and sedentary behaviours. ConDiPa contrib utes to DEDIPAC KH multidisciplinary understanding of cultural determinants of health, diet and physical activity with a special focus on the impact of migration and social inequalities. ConDiPa participates in five DEDIPAC KH work packages and tasks in t wo thematic areas: TA2 "Determinants of dietary behavior, physical activity and sedentary behavior across the life course and in vulnerable groups"; and TA3 "Evaluating and benchmarking of public health and policy interventions aimed at improving dietary behavior, physical activity and sedentary behavior across the life course". ConDiPa will participate in DEDIPAC KH by being WP and task leader in WP3.1 "Good practice policies and multi-component interventions for dietary, physical activity and sedentar y behaviours including conditions for successful implementation across Europe", doing systematic literature reviews, evaluating Frisklivssentraler by pilot testing the protocol and toolbox developed within DEDIPAC KH, and other network activities. The C onDiPa consortium brings together researchers from SIFO, HiOA and NSSS with complementary multidisciplinary competencies. ConDiPa's participation in DEDIPAC KH will strengthen international and multidisciplinary networking, collaboration and cooperation, and generate and facilitate exchange of knowledge relevant for developing research based policies and interventions. Participation in DEDIPAC KH will also be linked to ongoing research projects funded by The Research Programme on Public Health and will s upport future collaboration and research. ConDiPA will use the opportunity given by participating in DEDIPAC KH to do additional research on Frisklivsentraler and ethnic minority groups.
