Prepare Norwegian participation in the ESFRI Infrastructure for Systems Biology - Europe

Awarded: NOK 9,823

Infrastructure Systems Biology Europe (ISBE) is an ESFRI project in the preparatory phase that received EU funding from August 2012. The aim of the ISBE is to develop a European infrastructure for systems biology that will allow broad groups within academ ia and industry to make extensive use of state-of-the-art system biology methodology in their R&D work. Moreover, compared to other ESFRI initiatives in biology, ISBE stands out by aiming to provide a scaffold by which one can accentuate the use of data g enerated in the others through integrative approaches. This Norwegian initiative takes advantage of the fact that the project manager is part of the leader team running ISBE and is responsible for developing the foundation for a pan-European modelling se rvice. This provides a golden opportunity for tuning the Norwegian efforts with other European efforts. Use of systems biology approaches in Norway is still quite moderate, and a national ISBE service node will most likely become very instrumental for r emedying this situation. The project will identify contributors to a national systems biology service network. Furthermore, the project will gather an overview of systems biology activities at NTNU, UiO, UiB, UiT and UMB. This information will be used a s a basis for identifying a possible model for a Norwegian infrastructure for systems biology services. Together, the partners in this project will prepare and submit a Norwegian application for the establishment of a Norwegian service infrastructure for systems biology before the preparatory ISBE-funding ceases in mid-2015. This initiative will be closely tuned with the Norwegian ELIXIR node and the Norwegian Genome Sequencing Centre.
