EWS Cultural Journalism in the Nordic Countries

Awarded: NOK 0.11 mill.

The workshops address the following topics: 1) Demarcating cultural journalism - from Nordic perspectives: Defining cultural journalism as journalistic and research topic is a challenge. Literature, movies, celebrities, food, religion etc. compete on the Nordic media agendas and dissolve the traditional boundaries of cultural journalism - the arts - indicating new cultural hierarchies and interpretations. How can we conceptualize cultural journalism in contemporary Nordic media culture? 2) Cultural journa lism beyond the Nordic borders - Nordic perspectives in a globalized society: Cultural journalism has the potential for cultivating cultural globalization and diversity. At the same time, culture is closely connected to national identity and cultural inst itutions, just as journalism typically views the world from a local perspective. How are these global/local tensions negotiated in the context of Nordic cultural journalism? 3) Professionalization/de-professionalization of Nordic cultural journalism - the challenge from media institutional logics and participatory practices: The role as cultural journalist is today allocated to a variety of cultural experts, media professionals, and celebrities, who interchangeably perform as reporters, pundits, and criti cs. At the same time, amateur critics or citizens engage in cultural debate on the internet, and challenge the privileged position of cultural intellectuals and professional journalists. How does this increasing heterogeneity of cultural arbiters of taste influence the production of cultural journalism in contemporary Nordic media culture? 4) Media institutional perspectives - cultural journalism as Nordic public service: Changes in Nordic public service broadcasting indicate a stronger editorial focus on cultural journalism, even though culture is in some countries marginalized in the main news programming. How do these strategies comply with national, Nordic, and international conceptions of public service?
