EWS Population Whole Genome Sequencing: Implications for the Nordic Solidaristic Health Care

Awarded: NOK 82,999

Project Number:

238475

Project Period:

2014 - 2014

Partner countries:

The time frame of the PopGen exploratory workshops is from 1 September 2014 to 31 December 2015. The activities during this period will involve three two-day workshops in Reykjavik, Helsinki and Linköping, respectively. The primary focus of the workshops is on the ethical, social and political issues and challenges that might arise in relation to new research on genetic, genealogical and medical data about populations and the advancement of genetic technology. At the workshops, analytical frameworks will be developed in order to investigate such topics as i) the possible changes whole genome sequencing may have upon our self-understanding as human beings and citizens; ii) how this self-understanding is made manifest in changing images of patients and the ir construction as responsible health consumers; iii) the potential connection between whole genome sequencing and personalised medicine, particularly in light of the main principles of bioethics (respect for autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence and jus tice); iv) the infrastructure and practical guidelines for the return of findings of genetic research back to patients; v) the effects whole genome sequencing and personalised medicine may have upon the practice of health care and the nature of medicine: vi) the possible unintended consequences all this may have for Nordic conceptions of solidaristic health care and just society. After the last workshop, applicants hope to have established conceptual framework for further applications for research grants on the topic of population whole genome sequencing and its implications for the Nordic solidaristic health care. The group of prospective workshops participants includes experts on medical ethics. At the first and the third workshop, researchers and exp erts will be invited as speakers and consultants on theoretical and practical matters. All meetings will be open to people who will be funded by their own projects.
