EWS Designing for Language Learning in the Wild: creating social infrastructures for second language learning.

Awarded: NOK 69,999

The funding shall shape a network of researchers in the Nordic countries who work with experiential forms of second language learning and teaching. The network will contribute both to theory development and to the development of new pedagogical practices. The theoretical background for the work of the network is interaction research and usage based language acquisition models. Experience Design and User Based Innovation (a design approach with roots in Scandinavian design tradition with a democratic under standing of innovation processes) are equally central in the development of new teaching material, environments and practices. The network will further develop a second language pedagogy that puts the user into the center of the learning process. The prem ise is that language as a phenomenon occurs in its use and is therefore learned in and through use. It is paramount for language development that the learners participate in relevant and meaningful interactions. Most of these interactions will go on outsi de classrooms and therefore our second language pedagogy implies a break with traditional language teaching, even the communicative oriented, which is done and practised in the classroom's institutional framework. However, we will not give up the classroo m as a learning space, we will not only develop methods to bring a second language user out in the real world where the target language is spoken, we will also develop methods to bring the experiences from the outside back into the classroom. We will do t his by developing tangible objects, applications and other technologies that create connections between L2 users and the surrounding communities. We will develop ways to record interactions outside the classroom and bring them back for feedback and furthe r analysis of the interaction.
