5G-Special Interest Group

The new ETP is the root for the proposed 5G Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) in Horizon 2020. It is important to fully understand the 5G-PPP objectives, structure and mechanisms. Norwegian actors (industrial, institutes, academia) need to account for the European industrial views on 5G technologies in order to best position themselves within the European Net!Works community. The mandate for such a mirror network will be to collectively respond to Net!Works information meetings through the - Positioning of Norwegian research partners through increased networking and contacts within the Net!Works community. It is important for Norwegian ICT partners to stretch beyond the national borders and reach European actors. Industry and institutes/academia positionin g in pair has been a very strong case for some initiatives. - Influencing EU research workplans in the longer term, thanks to collaborative efforts in writing Strategic Research and Innovation Agendas (SRIA) that can serve as a base for subsequent work programmes. Within the 5G-PPP, these include radio networks infrastructure, convergence beyond last mile, network management, virtual and software-defined networks (ICT14). Other topics related to 5G are scattered into a number of other challenges, e.g., ICT5, ICT6, ICT11, ICT30. - Identification of the Norwegian specifics that are not taken into account in the EU calls and that are relevant for a subsequent national call in the period 2014-2016. These include the Northern Areas where communication networ k infrastructure may be sparse (e.g., little or no satellite coverage), large maritime environment and industry (industry monitoring and control with dedicated networks or corollary networks to 3G/4G), scattered population, difficult terrain, high number of tunnels where wireless communications including relaying are particularly useful.
