The highest level of accuracy in a finite element code is gained by using solid element technology. It is only this modelling condition that can account for multi-axial stress states and then fully take advantage of advanced material models at all scales. However, traditional solid element technology has limitations, the practical outcome being that elements need to be given a certain aspect ratio (side-length ratio) in order to perform well. This results in very large models. To this day, the application of solid element technology has been restricted to use by research institutions and applied to limited problems only. Large-scale structures have mainly been modeled by 2D shell element technology. However, this changed in 2010 when IMPETUS Afea launched a commercial non-linear FE tool fully based on higher order element technology & based on GPU technology for high-computational speed (IMPETUS Afea Solver). Since then this code with its solid element technology has been applied on several engineering sc ales, from modeling heart tissue to large offshore modules. In this project we shall use IMPETUS Afea Solver as the Design-Loop-Software and develop interfaces with routines from specialist SW to handle several scales.
