NORWEGIAN RESEARCH NETWORK IN MATHEMATICAL MODELS IN GEOPHYSICAL FLOWS, IMAGE AND SIGNAL PROCESSING, TOPOLOGY AND GEOMETRY

Alternative title: Norsk forskningsnettverk i geofysikk flo, bilde og signalbehandling, topologi og geometri

Awarded: NOK 5.0 mill.

Following the recommendation of the 2012 evaluation in mathematics in Norway and the follow-up plan, we propose a networking interdisciplinary project in which the University of Bergen (UiB) cooperates with the University of Oslo (UiO), University of Tromsø (UiT), Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU, Trondheim), University College of Telemark (HiT), and the University of Stavanger (UiS) in the following interacting research fields bound in work packages: *WP1. Mathematics of Geophysical Flows (UiB, NTNU, UiO); *WP2. Mathematical Models in Image and Signal Processing (UiB, UiO, NTNU, UiT, UiS, HiT); *WP3. Topology and Geometry (UiB, UiO, NTNU, UiT). All three work packages are intrinsically related by mathematical methods and approaches. Several tasks are included in all work packages. It is the aim to create highly professional, well-prepared, creative and broadminded researchers by means of high quality research based education and training. Special attention is paid to the recruiting program both at master and bachelor level in which we plan to maintain an active dialog with high schools. Being a national network, the proposed project assumes strong international cooperation and networking with leading institutions in Europe, Asia, and USA. The project will facilitate and fertilize joint research in the leading Norwegian universities, both inter-Norwegian and international mobility, research based training within interdisciplinary environment. The proposed project is in line with the strategic directions of the development of the university system in Norway and within the European research area (Horizon 2020). The funding from this project has been important for obtaining new results within the mathematical theory of geometric imaging and neurogeomtry, and the mathematical modeling of ocean circulation and surface waves in the ocean. The grant has funded a number of international conferences which have helped improve the international visibility of the Norwegian research groups involved in the project. The project has also allowed us to create "Mattesirkelen" which is a college-level mathematics course offered to students in high school, and which has had a high level of participation from the high school in and around Bergen.
