PES2020 for "Climate change mitigation and adaptation: transition towards a sustainable low-carbon society (MITADAPT)" (SC5-3a-2014)

Awarded: NOK 59,999

The overall objective of the "Climate change mitigation and adaptation: transition towards a sustainable low-carbon society (MITADAPT)" project is to provide concrete insights on the implications of different designs of climate change governance in the EU at various spatial scales (from local, national, regional to the aggregated EU level). The proposed project will provide a comprehensive economic assessment of climate change, based on different mitigation and adaptation strategies, including inaction by different regions and the EU Roadmap 2050. Insights from recent developments in climate science will be used to improve the modelling of the climate system and adaptation options in integrated assessment models. This will allow us to analyse the economic effects of climate change scenarios, as well as effects on social cohesion. The project will focus on the societal and technological transition in the energy system and on adaptation to climate change by the various sectors and systems in Europe. A radic al transformation towards a resilient and sustainable low-carbon society can only be achieved by understanding the delicate feedbacks between climatic changes, mitigation and adaptation, and economic welfare. We further develop and apply integrated assess ment models of the climate system and the economy to study the impacts, costs and benefits of different mitigation and adaptation policy pathways (for the EU, in the context of the actions in other world regions) on economic as well as social outcomes. In teraction between researchers using integrated assessment models and social and political scientists will ensure that economic impacts (e.g. economic growth and employment in different sectors and EU countries), social impacts (e.g. social cohesion, equit y) and environmental impacts (e.g. air quality, water) are taken into account when analysing policy options and opportunities for institutional change.
