SwimM - revolusjonerende nytt system for inspeksjon og intervensjon av subsea-installasjoner

Alternative title: SwimM - a revolutionary new system for inspection and intervention of subsea installations

Awarded: NOK 4.2 mill.

The number of subsea-installations is increasing, and combined with an aging infrastructure, the need for subsea IMR (Inspection, Maintenance, and Repair) is rising. Today's ROV-based solutions for IMR have limitations in terms of size and shape. Therefore, the industry is in need for new solutions. By combining solid research within robotics with industry relations and understanding, will SwimM implement and verify a concept for subsea IMR based on snake robotics. As swimming manipulator arms will snake robots have several advantages: They are self-propulsive, small cross-section provide access everywhere on subsea templates, and the snake construction allows intervention possibilities. The concept will, in time, introduce autonomy in IMR operations. Development of autonomy for the snake robot will revolutionize the industry and significantly increase the market potential.
