Photographs Sent Home: A Visual History of Migration

Awarded: NOK 85,000

This research monograph examines the photographs created and sent home by Norwegian migrants to America from the late-19th to the early twenty-first century, and - more broadly - argues for the need to use visual as well as textual sources in the writing of diasporic histories. It has been meticulously researched and includes 261 photographs as source material. It is the first full-length volume to focus on the visual embodiment of the migrant experience and will therefore be particularly useful to schola rs of the history of migration and photography. Bloomsbury Academic would like to publish this academic monograph in English for prestige reasons as part of their new academic photography list. Bloomsbury Academic seeks to make available high quality pe er reviewed material for students and academic researchers. As there is very little academic work currently available on this topic, it is anticipated that 'Photographs Sent Home' will be an important contribution to the study of photographic history.
