NABIC Reserach school 2014: Coastal and ocean processes in the Bay of Bengal in a changing climate and their impacts on society

Awarded: NOK 0.25 mill.

Nansen-Bangladesh International Centre for Coastal, Ocean and Climate Studies, Dhaka, Bangladesh will in cooperation with Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center, Bergen, Norway, Nansen Scientific Society, Bergen, Norway and Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies, Dhaka, plan and host the International PhD Winter Research School 2014 "Coastal and ocean processes in the Bay of Bengal in a changing climate and their impacts on society" in Cox´s Bazar, Bangladesh during the period October 12-18, 2014. Bangladesh is highly vulnerable to climatic and environmental changes, as a result of e.g. more frequent hurricanes and rising sea level. E.g. a sea level rise of 1 meter will flood 17% of Bangladesh and cause displacement of about 20 million people. Any interstate conflict of this scale would get considerably more international attention than the problem of climate refugees has in the international community today. The NABIC International Winter Research School will have a multi and cross-disciplinary thematic approach to meet the challenges and opportunities in the region. The Research school has been announced widely at web and via direct mail etc., with an application deadline on 20. August 2014. 61 student and young scientist have applied for participation, mainly from Bangladesh, including six from India and one located in Norway. The scientific committee is now at the stage of selecting the 30 qualified participants. All expenses will be covered for the selected participants. Resource persons from Bangladesh, Norway, India, and the Netherlands will be teaching during the Research School. The results of the research school and complete and publish a student report/publication. Participating students may also be recruited for further studies and research tasks associated with the topics addressed during the research school.
