E-INFRA 2014 - a national e-Infrastrucure for science

Alternative title: E-INFRA 2014 - a national e-Infrastrucure for science

Awarded: NOK 75.7 mill.

UNINETT Sigma2 is responsible for the procurement and operation of the national e-infrastructure for computer science in Norway offering services based on HPC and data storage systems for scientific data. The lifetime of such systems are 4-5 years due to the technical development and the cost of maintenance. The objective of this project is to replace some of these systems to ensure that we can continue to offer cost effective services which cover the users need both in functionality and capacity. The existing four HPC systems will be reduced to two system, and the two systems with the highest maintenance cost will be replaced first. In order to reduce the need of moving data it has been decided that the e-infrastructure shall be based on a data centric structure with tight coupling between data storage and equipment for HPC and other services. Based on this, the scope of this project is to procure and install the following equipment: - An HPC system to replace two of the the existing systems - A low entry HPC system for program development and education - A storage system replacing the existing system (NorStore)

From 01.01.2015 a new collaboration framework for the national e-infrastructure has been established. As a consequence, a new company, UNINETT Sigma2, has replaced the former UNINETT Sigma organization. The company manage the joint funding initiative between the Research Council of Norway and the universities. The new model implies that the new company has a broader strategic responsibility and stronger operative control, in addition to more long-term funding. The scope of this project proposal is to secure sufficient funding for investments in computing and storage resources for the national e-infrastructure. These investments are planned for the period 2016-2017. The purpose is to ensure that national research communities have access to state-of-the-art e-infrastructure for science.
