Wood Science Workshop for Kids is a course for 3rd and 4th graders in afternoon care in schools (AKS, SFO). Forestry is an important industrial sector in Norway and wood from the Norwegian forests is a natural and sustainable material. Therefore, the share of wood in e.g. constructions and the generation of energy should be increased. Understanding of wood is the basis for good and motivated scientists, architects, engineers, and others that work with wood. It is important for us to create this interest in forestry, the use of the raw material wood, natural sciences and scientific research. With the financial support of the PROFORSK program of the Norwegian Research council and in collaboration with three AKS/SFO at Ila School in Oslo, Fjellstrand School on Nesodden and Åsgård School in Ås did the Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomic Research develop a five-week-workshop that fits into the routines of AKS and SFO. The course Wood Science Workshop for Kids wants to show children how it is to be a wood scientist. Research is nothing mystical, it is all about curiosity, about how it is to be curious about the world around us and get answers on questions of how things work. The driving force in the Wood Science Workshop for Kids is the children's natural curiosity. The course is designed for children to discover how much fun it is to do research and find out how things work. Through the course, children will get acquainted with wood as an exciting, natural material. They will, by means of every day examples, learn about wood biology and wood physics. In the course of the five workshop days, Wood Science Workshop for Kids will look at different wood technological topics: Day 1: Wood in our everyday life Importance of wood as a raw material. How do trees grow, and how are they built up? Day 2: Water transport The children will get acquainted with the water transport system of a tree and, after some experiments, are supposed to develop a model of the water transporting system in trees. Day 3: Paper Children get introduced to recycling and how paper is built up. How can you make your own recycled paper? Day 4: The strength of wood Day 4 is about studying the strength of wood, the children are supposed to formulate their expectations prior to the experiments. The children build wooden bridges by means of 13 small wooden sticks and a manual. Day 5: Bioenergy That is the last day of the ?Wood Science Workshop for Kids? and there is a small bonfire planed. The children get safety information and get explanations on how to handle a fire. Skogbransjen er en viktig næringsvei i Norge og tre fra skogen er et naturlig og bærekraftig material som bør brukes mer til konstruksjoner og energi. Engasjement og forståelse for materialet er grunnleggende for å skaffe gode og motiverte forskere, arkitekter, sivilingeniører og andre som jobber med tre. For oss er det viktig å skape interesse for skogen, bruken av råmaterialene derfra samt realfag og forskning. Rekruteringen til videregående og universiteter på skogfag, realfag og teknikk har gått drastisk ned, mens humanoria kan vise til et overskudd av studenter. Dette medfører en stor ubalanse i etterspørsel etter og fornyelse av arbeidsmarkedet. Vi ønsker å forandre dette på lang sikt. Med treforskerskolen ønsker vi å øke barnas interesse for forskning og naturlige materialer hos barn i 3-4. klasse. Med støtte av tre AKS/SFO fra Ila skole i Oslo, Fjellstrand skole på Nesodden og Åsgård skole på Ås ønsker Skog og landskap å utvikle et fem ukers kurs (en ettermiddag per uke), som skal passe inn i Aktivitetsskolen (AKS) og Skolefritidsordningens (SFO) hverdag, der ulike aspekter ved treteknologi vil bli presentert. Ved å involvere barna aktivt i å løse tekniske problemer og spørsmål, blir de umiddelbart kjent med oppgaveorientert vitenskapelig arbeid. I løpet av prosjektperioden ønsker vi å utvikle og validere kurshefte til barn og informasjons- og bakgrunnsmateriale til personell i AKS/SFO for å gjøre de istand til å gjennomføre kurset i egen regi. I tillegg planlegger vi å utvikle webinarer som kan nå personell i AKS/SFO i hele Norge. For en enkel distribusjon av konseptet, skal en nettbasert plattform brukes for å muliggjøre enkel tilgang til all nødvendig informasjon for personell i AKS/SFO, lærere eller andre interesserte organisasjoner eller privatpersoner
