Workshop on: Interdisciplinary Polar Studies in Svalbard

Awarded: NOK 0.19 mill.

The Centre for Polar Studies (CPS, www.polarknow.us.edu.pl), was awarded status of centre of excellence in the field of earth sciences in 2014. CPS is hosted by the University of Silesia, together with Institute of Geophysics and Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences. CPS and The University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS, www.unis.no), will host a workshop on Interdisciplinary Polar Studies in Svalbard. The workshop will take place in Longyearbyen and Hornsund (Svalbard) for 6 days in September 2015. Norwegian and Polish institutions have a long lasting relation through Arctic research and education in several disciplines. IPSiS will enable Norwegian, Polish and other international scientists and PhD students to meet, discuss and develop a holistic view on the interactive effects of climate change on Arctic nature and societies. The workshop is highly relevant for the SSF/ Strategic grant call as its intention is to facilitate international interdisciplinary cooperation. The workshop has a focus on young scientists (PhD students) and their mentors. The participants will get hands on experience in working both near Longyearbyen and in Hornsund. This networking strategy intends to facilitate future scientific cooperation in Svalbard, promote mobility between the research facilities in Longyearbyen and Hornsund and promote cooperation under SIOS.
