JPI Climate workshop "Science communication and Integrated socio-economic policy and response analysis"

Within the intergovernmental initiative JPI Connecting Climate Knowledge for Europe (JPI Climate) launched in 2011, fourteen European countries have now committed to coordinate their activities in the field of climate research by implementing a jointly developed Strategic Research Agenda. JPI Climate contributes with its common efforts to the overall EU objective of developing and strengthening the European Research Area. It supports excellent science and multilateral cooperation focussing on giving answers to climate change conditioned societal circumstances and changes. The connection of various natural and social scientific disciplines is part of the JPI Climate working concept which aims at fostering cross-border and cross-disciplinary research and science-practice interaction. Climate Knowledge being at the heart of the initiative JPI Climate covers the whole spectrum from creation of knowledge to the use of it in terms of impact on societal change within its various action fields. This upcoming workshop on “ Improving knowledge for enhanced climate change response and decision-making” will explore the mechanisms of influencing decision making in order to better understand how knowledge needs to be provided and conveyed in order to finally result in relevant action in the face of climate change. Together with confirmed scientists from various disciplines dedicated to tackling climate change as one of the major societal challenges and representatives from national research funding organizations in JPI Climate, stakeholders and policy makers from national and European levels we will discuss and explore answers to three main questions: 1.Which knowledge is needed to better inform and speed up decision-making on climate change responses in a socially robust and democratic manner? 2.How can we enhance the saliency, effectiveness and credibility of a knowledge production process that is successful in informing decision-making of a wide range of stakeholders? 3.How can we ensure that public and private climate services fully integrate knowledge on climate impacts, reflect user-needs, and facilitate human, social, and economic aspects for actually enabling and supporting drivers for climate action? The format of this two-day workshop, taking place in Brussels at the Belgian Science Policy Office BELSPO, that combines key note speeches and plenary debate with various breakout groups for intensive discussion dedicated to specific topics in the field of climate change response decision-making. The workshop will produce a position paper to guide further work of JPI climate as well as to provide summary results to multiple stakeholders.
