Robotic rehabilitation of upper-limb after stroke

Awarded: NOK 0.98 mill.

The main purpose of the pre project is to establish a consortium of high-level national and international research organisations that will submit a competitive grant application for a researcher project on Robotic Rehabilitation of Upper-Limb after Stroke targeting the IKTPLUSS initiative in 2016. The project will have three major objectives; establishing an high-level national and international consortium, establishing a joint understanding of the state-of-the-art across disciplines, and writing a highly competitive proposal. Robot-assisted rehabilitation of upper-limb movements in stroke patients may significantly improve on existing practice through increased effectivity, closer monitoring of patient progress, higher quality and more objective therapeutic sessions, and more personalized patient care. The main hypotesis of the project is that recent advances by the consortium in robot control methods can enable more cost-effective robot rehabilitation of the upper-limb with increased functionality and quality through the use of new standard robot manipulators that are designed for human-robot interaction. The project results thus have great potential for more effective, better and more personalized patient care, more objective measurements and reports on patient progress and rehabilitation status, better evaluation of the effectiveness of the treatment, and a potential for developing new products enabling better therapeutic treatment closer to the home of the patients.
