E!9432 High performance data reconstruction equipment for longterm archived digital content from film

Alternative title: HiperScan

Awarded: NOK 4.0 mill.

Piql vision is to reshape ultra-secure digital preservation. We have over the last years developed advanced and innovative technology that enables delivery of secure and migration free long term preservation of valuable digital data assets sold to data owners as a service; Piql Preservation Services. Piql uses photosensitive film (piqlFilm) as storage medium since this storage medium has a lifetime of more than 500 years. The HiPerScan project has increased the reading speed of the solution by developing a new and improved prototype for a reading device. This reading device uses the next generation optical design together with new camera and image acquisition (image grabbers) that combined gives a significantly improved image quality and reading speed in terms of images read per second. To process the increased image stream it is also developed new methods and algorithms for image decoding and processing, partly using hardware accelerated image processing (GPUs) using the standardized programming interface OpenCL. The sum of the improvements ensures that the solution now is much more effective and competitive. The developed prototype fulfils most of the requirements defined in the start of the project, but some work and testing remains before serial production can be started.

Piql's aim is to reshape digital preservation. Piql is the provider of Piql Preservation services, i.e. long term preservation of digital data on film. Today, scanning and reconstruction speed of data back from film is a major bottleneck. Accordingly, any advances in scanners towards high performance scanners will have two impacts: (1) higher scanning speed will immediately improve economy of the process and (2) better scanner resolution will allow to enhance data density stored on film. Piql will sell the new High Performance Scanner to its existing clients (Piql Partners) globally. The two above reasons will make this an easy sell! The new scanner will also find customers in the media industry and other application fields. Long term preservation of digital data on film as storage medium is becoming an established technology. It is well understood that the amount of data for longterm archiving is growing exponentially and at the same time the market is demanding desperately for such kind of services. Enhancing data density on the medium (film) is a crucial aspect for success of the technology. Project objectives: - Design, develop and demonstrate an ultimate high performance data reconstruction system for reliable, consistent and fast reconstruction of digital content recorded for longterm archival storage. - Investigate on new optical concepts (scanner optics and illumination system) - Investigate on new mechanical concepts - Develop new software and algorithms to handle the massive amounts of raw data - Develop new electronics systems
