Rotary furnace pre-project

Awarded: NOK 1.00 mill.

Aluminium dross is a mixture of aluminium metal and various oxides, carbides, nitrides, and other non-metal compounds. The metal content in the dross can contain up to 90%. About 1% of all aluminium produced is in the dross. Therefore the total value of the metal is very high. The standard procedure of processing aluminium dross today is to melt the dross together with salt. The salt helps agglomerate the aluminium metal droplets so it is easy to separate the metal from the salt slag. The salt slag must then be washed before the oxide can be used as a product. This pre-project will be in the form of a feasibility study to form a basis for an innovation project which will be applied for in BIA in fall 2015 where redesign of both the factory in Raudsand (currently salt cake treatment) and at Rød (dross treatment) will be important parts. The feasibility study will also include SWOT-analysis of the processesand the market. That is to identify Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats.
