Petroleum Research School of Norway

Alternative title: Nasjonal forskerskole i petroleumsfag

Awarded: NOK 20.0 mill.

Petroleum Research School of Norway/Nasjonal forskerskole i petroleumsfag (NFiP) has been established to improve PhD education in petroleum related sciences at universities in Norway. Objectives are to coordinate interdisciplinary collaboration in petroleum related sciences between universities graduating PhDs, both nationally and internationally, and provide National and International seminars, courses, workshops and conferences. Exchange student programs have been established to increase international collaborations. Emphasis is in particular on improving interaction with industry. NFiP covers all petroleum related disciplines, but is limited to upstream activities, including exploration, recovery mechanisms and CO2 storage for more sustainable petroleum production. The last 5 years, Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) has in particular been emphasized to prepare the next generation energy engineers on future global energy needs and perspectives on more sustainable oil and gas production; both with respect to economy and environment. Special efforts have been on recruiting more Master students to PhD studies of petroleum related challenges in the energy transition. All the five Norwegian universities with PhD graduation in petroleum related sciences are members of the school; i.e. UiO, UiS, UiB, NTNU and UiT; also UNIS is part of the research school. Due to the pandemic in 2020, several courses, conferences and activities have been cancelled. However, some initiatives on digitalization of NFiP activities have been started: among them digitalization of field excursions at Svalbard. New on-line digital CCUS-courses assisting the energy transition to more sustainable energies have been established with participation both from petroleum engineers from Norwegian and foreign oil companies, PhD- and MSc students from all universities in Norway, as well as from the NORAD collaboration and from 13 international university MoU contracts signed with NFiP, both in Europe, Asia and in South and North America. More than 1600 students from 15 countries in Europe, Asia and Amerika have participated in the NFiP activities; link: www.nfip.no

Petroleum Research School of Norway/Nasjonal forskerskole i petroleumsfag (NFiP): PhD education in petroleum related sciences at universities in Norway will improve and be more efficient by coordinated interdisciplinary collaboration between the universities graduating these PhDs. Petroleum Research School of Norway, including as active collaborating participants all five major universities in Norway, was therefore established March 10th, 2010. NFiP has so far exclusively been funded by industry; OED provided a one year starting grant. NFiP offers opportunities for the PhD students admitted at the participating universities in Norway, to receive coordinated teaching, intensive courses, participate in international, interdisciplinary collaborative research projects utilizing the networks of all universities in Norway. They are also being offered meeting places and discussion forums that include their supervisors. The NFiP Executive Board consists of two representatives from each of the five collaborating universities. An important objective of the research school is to provide more candidates to the petroleum industry by securing sufficient recruitment to the PhD studies in the petroleum related sciences and to secure that all PhDs have access to the best and most reputational research groups. A secondary objective is to improve the expertise within upstream petroleum activities in Norway. NFiP has contributed to improve petroleum education, scientifically improved petroleum technology and provided more values for the society and the 474 participating PhDs. NFiP covers all petroleum related disciplines, but is limited to upstream activities, including exploration, recovery mechanisms and CO2 storage for more sustainable upstream petroleum activities. All universities with PhD graduation in petroleum related fields are members of the school; i.e. UiO, UiS, UiB, NTNU and UiT; also UNIS is part of the research school; see www.NFiPweb.org for more info on partners.
