Om Paris-avtalen skal oppfylles må 80% av verdens energiproduksjon ha null utslipp innen 2030, og all energi må ha null utslipp innen 2050. Teknologiene som behøves for å få til dette dramatiske skiftet avhenger av mineraler som kalles «kritiske materialer» (litium, kobber, sjeldne jordarter osv.). Hvis disse utvinnes i betydelig omfang i Arktis kan det endre regionens fokus fra olje og gass til gruvevirksomhet. Det vil kunne komplisere relasjonene mellom de arktiske statene og mellom dem og eksterne aktører som er interessert i disse ressursene. Frem til nå har kritiske materialer fått lite oppmerksomhet innen forskningen på arktisk geopolitikk, og ditto har forskningen om kritiske materialer globalt viet Arktis lite oppmerksomhet. NEXTRUSH-prosjektet skal fylle tomrommet mellom disse to forskningsområdene. 

Prosjektet er tverrfaglig. En ingeniør skal studere hvilke materialer som etterspørres for teknologier for ren energi, en geolog vil studere eksisterende data om arktiske mineralreserver, og samfunnsvitere vil analysere hva det de finner ut betyr for geopolitikk, internasjonale relasjoner, arktiske institusjoner og Kinas rolle i regionen. Prosjektet vil inkludere en analyse av hvilke land og produsenter som dominerer markedene for de forskjellige mineralene samt en scenarioøvelse.

Prosjektet vil produsere seks artikler i fagtidsskrifter, Arctic Environmental Responsibility Index (AERI), scenarier for arktisk gruvevirksomhet og dens konsekvenser, Svalbard-symposiet om gruvevirksomhet på havbunnen og fora for kritiske materialer og risiko.

Prosjektet utføres av noen av de forskerne som er mest aktive innen samfunnsvitenskapelig forskning på nordområdene i Norge.

To fulfill the Paris Agreement, the world needs to transition to 80% zero-emission energy by 2030, and 100% by 2050. The clean energy technologies needed to make this dramatic shift are dependent on the minerals known as "critical materials" (lithium, copper, rare earth elements etc.). If these are sourced from the Arctic, it might cause a shift in the interest in the region from fossil fuels to mining. This may complicate relations among the Arctic states and with the external actors interested in these resources. So far, research on Arctic geopolitics has paid little attention to this shift, and, conversely, the growing literature on the geopolitics of critical materials for the energy transition pays little attention to the Arctic. The NEXTRUSH project will fill the gap.

The project is genuinely interdisciplinary. An engineer will review the materials needed for clean energy technologies, geologists will review the data on Arctic reserves and compare them to global reserves, and, finally, social scientists will assess the implications for geopolitics, international relations, Arctic institutions and governance, and the role of China. The reviews of existing technological and geological data will be combined the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index to measure the market dominance of supply sources and a Shell-style scenario-building exercise will be carried out. 

The project will result in six articles published in academic journals, the Arctic Environmental Responsibility Index (AERI) on oil, gas and mining in the Arctic (with its own website), a set of scenarios for Arctic mining and its consequences, the Svalbard Seabed Mining Symposium and Critical Materials Risk Fora.

Next Arctic Rush? Critical Materials for the Energy Transition

I løpet av det siste tiåret har stadig flere offentlige og private aktører ønsket seg innpass i den eksklusive ‘romklubben’. Private organisasjoner og stater - inkludert de nordiske landene - utvikler utskytningsinstallasjoner i den arktiske regionen. Land i nordområdene har lenge vist liten interesse for utviklingen av romsektoren i nordområdene. Dermed markerer det økende politiske fokuset og økonomiske innspillene til sektoren et strategisk skifte, med mulige konsekvenser for styresett, bærekraftig utvikling og sikkerhet. Det er foreløpig lite kunnskap om hvordan utviklingen av rominfrastruktur i nordområdene så langt har påvirket sikkerhets- og miljøpolitikk og praksis, og hva konsekvensene er for den arktiske regionen. NordSpace-prosjektet skal adressere dette kunnskapsgapet. Forskningen vil omhandle skjæringspunktet mellom romvirksomhet og miljø- og sikkerhetspolitikk, i tre mindre kjente romnasjoner i Norden: Norge, Sverige og Island. Det tverrfaglige teamet vil kombinere kvalitativ nettverksanalyse, etnografiske og visuelle metoder, og diskursanalyse. Målet er nyansert empirisk kunnskap om økonomiske aktiviteter, styringsrammer og ambisjoner og visjoner til de tre landene i sammenheng med deres forsøk på å oppnå global anerkjennelse som romfartsnasjoner. Virkningene av disse aktivitetene på geopolitiske konstellasjoner og på lokalmiljøene i den arktiske regionen vil bli analysert.

Over the last decade, outer space has become an opportunity for economic accumulation for public and private actors. While there is increasing interest in the social sciences in understanding how global space ambitions and commercial interests shape local environments or environmental geopolitics, there is however, little understanding how the development of space infrastructures in the High North affect security and environmental politics and practices today, and with what kind of consequences for the Arctic region. Located at the intersection of International Relations (IR), Science and Technology Studies (STS) and Social Anthropology, NordSpace aims to understand the ramifications of space infrastructures in the High North by systematically studying the intersection of space activities with environmental and security politics in the case of three lesser-known space nations in the Nordic region i.e., Norway, Sweden, and Iceland. Bringing together an interdisciplinary team with backgrounds from different social sciences and expertise in various qualitative methods, the project will innovatively combine qualitative network analysis with ethnographic, visual methods, and discourse analysis. The results of the project will advance scientific knowledge on space activities of three Nordic countries and the implications of space infrastructures for the High North to build critical expertise across Nordic countries on a new and rapidly developing phenomenon.

Nordic Space Infrastructures - Environment, Security, and Future Imaginaries of Outer Space in the High North

Den vedvarende smitteoverføringen av prioner som gir skrantesjuke (CWD) fortsetter å true overlevelsen til hjorteviltpopulasjoner i Nord-Amerika, og deres usikre zoonotiske potensiale vekker bekymring for folkehelsen.
Siden det første tilfellet av CWD hos norsk villrein og elg i 2016, er sykdommen funnet i flere norske regioner og nordiske land. Samarbeidet vårt med nøkkelpartnere i dette prosjektet har ledet til identifiseringen av flere CWD-stammer hos norsk rein, elg og hjort. Av spesiell betydning er disse stammene ikke relatert til de som for tiden finnes i Nord-Amerika. Disse funnene har klare implikasjoner for den fremtidige forvaltningen av disse europeiske skrantesjuke prioner hos hjortedyr.
Med konsortiets brede og komplementære kompetanse og ekspertise, vil dette ambisiøse prosjektet kombinere dyreforsøk i reinsdyr- og gnageremodeller, i tillegg til in vitro-eksperimenter med de nyeste og sensitive teknologiene (RT-QuIC, PMCA) og en potensiell feltanvendbar test, Minnesota-QuiC-testen (MN-QuiC).
Potensialet til CWD-stammer for spredning blant hjortevilt og for å infisere nye dyrearter, inkludert mennesker, avhenger i hovedsak av to hovedfaktorer: nivået av EKSPONERING for CWD-smitte og mottageligheten til de EKSPONERTE ARTENE for de forskjellige CWD-stammene. EmergingCWD tar sikte på å adressere begge sider av dette problemet. Det vil gi en ny forståelse av hvordan de fremvoksende CWD-prionene identifisert i Norge kan spre seg både innenfor og mellom vertsarter.
Siden prioner er forskjellige fra de fleste kjente smittestoffer som virus og bakterier, er kunnskapsmangelen om smitteevne og overføringsmekanismer fortsatt stor. Gitt de mulige dramatiske konsekvensene av prionrelatert sykdom, vil dette prosjektet representere et avgjørende innspill for å tette dette kunnskapsgapet av relevans for både Norge og det internasjonale vitenskapsmiljøet.

The inexorable contagious transmission of chronic wasting disease (CWD) prions continues to threaten the survival of cervid populations in North America, and their uncertain zoonotic potential raises concerns for public health. 
Since the first case of CWD in Norwegian reindeer and moose in 2016, the disease is found in several Norwegian regions and Nordic countries. Our recent collaborations with key partners in this proposal have identified multiple CWD strains in Norwegian reindeer, moose and red deer. Of particular importance, these strains are unrelated to those currently sustaining the North American epidemic. These findings have clear implications for the future management of these emerging European prions. 
With the strong and complementary skills and expertise of the consortium and the unprecedented resources it represents, this ambitious project will combine live animal experiments in reindeer and mice models, in addition to in vitro experiments with the most recent and sensitive technologies (RT-QuIC, PMCA) and a potential field-deployable test,  the Minnesota-QuiC test (MN-QuiC).
The potential of CWD strains for spreading among cervids and for infecting new animal species, including humans, essentially depends on two main factors: the level of EXPOSURE to CWD infectivity and the intrinsic SUSCEPTIBILITY of the EXPOSED SPECIES to the different CWD strains. EmergingCWD aims at addressing both sides of this issue. It will provide a new understanding of how the emerging CWD prions identified in Norway can spread both within and between host species. 
Being different from most known infectious agents like viruses and bacteria, knowledge about prions, their infectiousness, and their transmission mechanisms continues to lag behind. Given the possible dramatic consequences of prion-related disease, this project will represent a decisive input to close this knowledge gap of relevance to both Norway and the international scientific community.

Chronic wasting disease  prions from Norwegian cervids: Assessing the pathogenesis, shedding, spillover and zoonotic potential

Genredigering er den nye generasjonen av genmodifiseringsteknikker som kan anvendes på mat gjennom produksjon av planter, dyr og mikroorganismer med ønskede agronomiske egenskaper. Nano4CRISPR går fra en «transgen laboratorietilnærming» til en «på stedet tilnærming» hvor komponentene for genredigering vil bli anvendt direkte i åkeren for å modifisere planter, skadedyr og andre organismer. 
Hovedformålet til Nano4CRISPR er å utvikle, teste og risikovurdere en innovativ plattform der nanopartikler og CRISPR-konjugater utvikles for bruk til fremtidig genredigering av produkter. Denne plattformen er unik i sin kombinasjon av nano- og genteknologi og er derfor velegnet til bruk i den banebrytende teknologien som skal benyttes for transport av nanoCRISPR-konjugater og representerer en signifikant fordel over de eksisterende metodene for genteknologi. Målrettet design av nanopartikler vil muliggjøre utviklingen av nanoCRISPR-konjugater som kan trenge gjennom plantecellenes rigide cellevegger og membraner for å oppnå genredigering av hele planter ute i en åker, uten å benytte kompliserte, lange og arbeidskrevende genteknologiske prosesser. Denne tilnærmingen vil også være aktuell innenfor andre felt, slik som akvakultur, skadedyrkontroll og økologiske bevaringsformål.
I tillegg til å utvikle nye nanoCRISPR-konjugater, vil vi også sette søkelys på risikovurdering og undersøke uønsket bruk/misbruk ved hjelp av en RRI (Responsible Research and Innovation) basert tilnærming. Vi vil også se nærmere på mulighetene for industriell produksjon og skalering av nanoCRISPR-konjugater, med den hensikt å forbedre underliggende risikovurderinger samt rammeverket innenfor vurderingen av samfunnsnytte, etikk og miljø som er relevante for genmodifiserte organismer. Interessenter fra akademia, industri, statlige etater og sivile samfunnsorganisasjoner i Norge og andre Europeiske land, vil delta aktivt sammen med oss i en samordnet prosess som vil gi en høy sosial relevans og tillit.

Nano4CRISPR will generate knowledge on nanoparticles based CRISPR delivery products that can be applied externally to crops in the open field for both agricultural and environmental purposes. The project aims to contribute to the transition towards environmentally friendly and sustainable food production following a Responsible Research and Innovation co-creation platform. NanoCRISPR conjugates have the potential to contribute to reducing the use of harmful chemistries that create persistent agrochemical pollution and to increasing resilience and suitability of our food system. The main goal of Nano4CRISPR is to develop, test and risk assess an integrated platform for the development of personalized nanoCRISPR conjugates for use in future gene-editing products directly in the field or at point of scale.  Rational nanoparticle design will enable the development of nanoCRISPR conjugates that can overcome membranes and rigid cell walls surrounding plant cells and enable gene-editing in whole plants, in the field, without the aid of complicated, long and laborious genetic engineering processes. Hence, the approach is also suitable for other field applications, such as in aquaculture, pest control, and ecological conservation purposes. The integrated gene-editing platform comprehends a holistic risk assessment approach including the investigation of unintended and malicious use. Stakeholders from academia, industry, governmental agencies, and civil society organizations in Norway and other European countries will actively participate with us in a co-creation process that delivers high societal relevance and trust.

Nano4CRISPR: Novel nanocarrier reagents for environmental delivery of CRISPR/Cas

Siden midten av 1970-tallet har Norge og Russland forvaltet de viktigste fiskebestandene i Barentshavet i fellesskap, inkludert verdens største torskestamme. Partene har lyktes i å opprettholde bestandene på et høyt nivå, og samarbeidet dem imellom har vært pragmatisk og kompromissorientert. Resultatene til Den blandede norsk-russiske fiskerikommisjonen regnes da også gjerne som en gullstandard i internasjonalt fiskerisamarbeid. Med den russiske invasjonen av Ukraina i 2022 har imidlertid en helt ny situasjon oppstått, og det norsk-russiske samarbeidet er under større press enn noen gang i sin snart 50-årige historie. Russland er utestengt fra Den internasjonale havforskningsrådet og har selv truet med å bryte fiskerisamarbeidet med Norge. I Norge er også ethvert samarbeid med Russland blitt kontroversielt. Dette har løftet fram nye juridiske og politiske spørsmål, som JOINTFISH BARENTS undersøker fra et havrettslig og statsvitenskapelig ståsted. Hvor langt rekker for eksempel havrettens krav om at stater skal samarbeide om forvaltningen av felles fiskebestander? Og hvor robust er egentlig det norsk-russiske forvaltningssamarbeidet i møte med nye geopolitiske utfordringer? Prosjektet følger også utviklingen i russisk fiskeripolitikk nært. Teoretisk søker prosjektet synergier mellom havrettslige og statsvitenskapelige tilnærminger til studiet av internasjonal fiskeriforvaltning. Fiskeribiologer deltar også i prosjektet for å sette de juridiske og politiske spørsmålene i en mer direkte forvaltningsmessig sammenheng.

Since the mid-1970s, Norway and Russia have managed the rich fish resources of the Barents Sea jointly, including the world’s largest cod stock. The achievements of the Joint Norwegian–Russian Fisheries Commission (JNRFC) are widely regarded as a golden standard for international fisheries management. However, with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, an entirely new situation has arisen. Russia is no longer part of the international marine scientific community or joint fisheries enforcement with other states. Indeed, it has threatened to suspend the quota arrangements of the JNRFC, which is the foundation of the bilateral regime. This has stirred up unprecedented legal and political uncertainties whose outcomes are far from certain. JOINTFISH BARENTS will investigate the nature and implications of those uncertainties, legally and politically. This will be done within the framework of a tightly integrated academic endeavour, with high ambitions empirically, theoretically and methodologically. Empirically, we will monitor developments in Russian fisheries politics, management and debate, drawing on Russian primary sources. In terms of theory, the project will provide analytical advances within and between disciplines and sub-disciplines, primarily between legal and political science research but also between subdisciplines within political science. In the study of the law of the sea, the project will contribute to the interpretation and operationalization of the legal duty of coastal states to cooperate in the management of shared fish stocks. In the field of international relations (IR), investigations of the resilience of the Barents Sea management regime will be combined with analysis of geopolitical implications. The core project team will also receive inputs on stock status from a marine science expert group. As regards methodology, the project will explore the interface between legal doctrinal method and social science interpretive methodology.

Joint Fisheries Management in the Barents Sea after Russias Invasion of Ukraine

Russland engasjerer seg i en rekke fredsprosesser. Dette prosjektet er designet for å undersøke hvorfor, hvordan, og med hvilke resultater, Russland engasjerer seg. Prosjektet vil undersøke både konflikter der Russland er krigførende part (som Ukraina), der landet er involvert som megler (som Afghanistan), og der landet er både krigførende part og megler (som Syria). Prosjektet vil utforske Russland sitt engasjement i hver av disse tre tilfellene: Minsk-prosessen over Donbass i Ukraina (2014–22); Moskva-prosessen over Afghanistan (2016–); og Astana-prosessen over Syria (2017–). Russland forholder seg også til fredsprosesser som permanent medlem av FNs sikkerhetsråd, der det har veto, og prosjektet vil kartlegge hvordan landet har stemt på resolusjoner som omhandler fredsprosesser. Analysen konsentrerer seg om seks dimensjoner og hvordan disse kommer til uttrykk: politisk kultur, interesser, normer, praksiser, institusjoner og eksterne relasjoner. Prosjektet er utformet slik at det skal kunne bidra med relevant kunnskap på løpende basis, via en kombinasjon av korte refleksjoner og lengre rapporter, rundebord for eksperter og beslutningstagere, samt akademiske artikler i internasjonale tidsskrift. Forskningsteamet består av fire personer med ledende ekspertise på fredsprosesser og dybdekunnskap om de relevante prosessene. Prosjektets målsetting er å tilby en systematisk analyse av russisk tilnærming til fredsprosesser, noe som vil være en viktig kunnskapsbasis for FN, diverse regjeringer, og private aktører, som har behov for å forstå og forholde seg til Russland i fredsprosesser.

Russia is frequently engaged in peace processes, in conflicts where it is a belligerent party (e.g., Ukraine), in conflicts where it is involved as a mediator (e.g., Afghanistan), and as a permanent member of the UN Security Council (UNSC). Russia’s approach to peace processes challenges the international peacemaking regime and sometimes entails competition with other peacemakers, including the UN. The Russian approach to peace processes is poorly understood, yet critically important, in Ukraine and beyond. In order to comprehend how Russia’s approach to peace processes differ over time, and across contexts, the RAPP project will examine Russia’s key engagements from the end of the Cold War to the present, and conduct three in-depth case studies: the Minsk process on Donbas (2014–22); the Moscow process on Afghanistan (2016–); and the Astana process on Syria (2017–). The analytical framework, applied across all the cases, covers six key dimensions: political culture, interests, norms, practices, institutions, and external relationships. Methodologically, the project will draw on interviews with individuals who have been directly engaged in the relevant processes, academic literature, news sources, and data on Russia’s UNSC voting patterns. Two-day expert roundtables are designed to engage stakeholders in discussing draft research reports, also serving as quality assurance. The project will pursue best practices in Open Research, posting practitioners’ reflection pieces and research reports, as well as publishing articles in leading journals. The research team brings together cutting-edge scholarship on peace processes with leading area studies experts (on Russia and the cases in focus). RAPP’s ultimate ambition is to provide a systematic analysis of Russia’s approach to peace-making, as a knowledge base that will help inform other actors – the UN, national governments, and civil society – on how to understand, and how to interact with, Russia in peace processes.

Peace as a continuation of war by other means? Russian Approaches to Peace Processes (RAPP)

Hvordan jobber Kina for å oppnå innflytelse i internasjonale organisasjoner med ansvar for saker som angår digitalisering? Dette er det ledende temaet og hovedspørsmålet vi studerer i CHIMULTI, som undersøker hvordan Kina, sammenliknet med India, USA og andre G20-land, jobber for å påvirke internasjonal styring over saker knyttet til digitalisering. Med søkelys på tre overlappende tema, standarder for kunstig intelligens, e-handelsregler og retningslinjer for bistand til cybersikkerhet, og relevante organisasjoner, utvikler vi typologisk teori for multilaterale styringsform-typer.

Den internasjonale styringen med saker som angår digitalisering er i liten grad institusjonalisert, men er samtidig gjenstand for økende stormaktsrivalisering. Like fullt er alle stater, ikke minst utviklingsland og lavinntektsland, avhengig av digitaliseringsressurser, og sikker tilgang til slike ressurser krever en viss internasjonal tilrettelegging og samhandling.

CHIMULTI bidrar med aktuell, ny og anvendelig kunnskap om hvordan og hvorfor Kina, en voksende stormakt med ledende digitaliseringsressurser, bruker det multilaterale systemet for å promotere sine interesser, påvirke beslutninger, oppnå innflytelse og bidra til FNs bærekraftsmål. Sammenlikningen med India, USA og andre G20-land sørger for at både data og forskningsresultater blir vurdert i lys av asiatiske og globale utviklingsspørsmål. Bak CHIMULTI står et lag bestående av faglig sterke og dedikerte forskere fra fire kontinenter, som vil bidra til akademiske og politiske debatter om digitalisering og internasjonal styring, multilateral utvikling og rivalisering og samarbeid mellom verdens stormakter.

How is China crafting influence in international organizations (IOs) associated with digitalization (‘digi’) issues? This is the overarching question investigated in CHIMULTI, which studies how China, with targeted comparison of India, USA and other G20 countries, is working to shape international digitalization governance. Contested and subject to major power rivalry, multilateral digi-issues governance is only nascently institutionalized, despite digital access and sustainable digital security depending on international facilitation. We apply typological theory and identify and theorize causal pathways leading to the formation of types of multilateral craftmanship, which consist of combinations of formal and informal resources and actions that countries utilize in their operations within- and in relation to IOs. Zooming in on three interrelated digi-issues (AI standards; e-commerce rules; cybersecurity aid guidelines) and related IOs (ITU, WTO and UNCTAD), we develop typological theory for craftmanship types. We thus contribute to ongoing debates about the changing character of the multilateral system and its ability to address one of the foremost impactful development topics for our time. With a team combining area-expertise with methodological skills, CHIMULTI conducts comparative quantitative and qualitative analysis, nuanced empirical investigation and develops an comprehensive dataset, all aimed at capturing varying aspects of evolving multilateral craftmanship. On this basis, the project will contribute to broader debates, first, about the evolving character of multilateral engagement and Chinese craftmanship, and second, on the institutionalization of digi-issues governance in multilateral settings. Concerning societal and policy-related impact, CHIMULTI provides a research-based roadmap into understanding which IOs, multilateral settings, and country representatives are especially relevant for digi-issues governance and policy making.

China and Evolving Multilateral Craftmanship in the Age of Digitalization (CHIMULTI)

Sammensetningen av fôret til laksen har i løpet av de siste 20 år gjennomgått store endringer, fra tradisjonelle lavfettdietter rike på marine ingredienser til dagens fettrike dietter rike på planteingredienser. Endringene har blant annet resultert i lavere innhold av de sunne omega-3 fettsyrene (EPA og DHA) og mineralet Zn i fôret. Alle disse faktorene kan medføre økt fettdeponering i laksen og økt risiko for betennelsestilstand og utvikling av sykdom.  Usunn fettdeponering kan dermed bidra til dødelighetstall på 15 til 20 prosent for oppdrettslaks i sjøvannsfasen.  Laks danner fettvevsdepoter ulike steder i kroppen, men fortsatt er mye ukjent om funksjonen til disse ulike depotene. I dette prosjektet vil vi fokusere på tre av de største depotene; henholdsvis bukfett og to ulike fettdepot tilknyttet hud og skinn.  Hos pattedyr er disse ulike depotene vist å ha forskjellige funksjoner. For eksempel, er bukfettet en stor bidragsyter til metabolsk inflammatorisk risiko, mens fettvev i tilknytning til huden kan ha en beskyttende rolle i tillegg til å ha en sentral rolle i skinnhelse og sårheling.  Dette prosjektet vil gi ny kunnskap om funksjon og fysiologi til de tre nevnte fettdepotene. Ved å bruke både in vivo og in vitro metodikk, vil vi kunne studere deres rolle i metabolske betennelsesprosesser, skjelettdeformiteter og sårheling og videre hvordan endret ulike ingredienser i dietten kan påvirke.

Fish mortality is a major challenge for the Aquaculture industry, with an annual 14.8 % mortality rate in 2020. Important causes include fatality related to mechanical handling, such as delousing (sea-lice also often cause skin wounds), infections, as well as non-transmittable diseases. Related to the latter, adult fish may develop excess fat deposition in different fat depots which are risk factors for development of low-grade metabolic inflammation and skeletal deformities. The level of fat, plant protein, and plant oil has increased in the diet of farmed salmon and the healthy omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and Zink has decreased. All these factors increase the risk of unhealthy lipid deposition in fat depots. Adipose tissue depots are complex organs, comprised of several different cell types, including mature adipocytes, preadipocytes, fibroblasts, immune cells, and adipose stem cells. Based on the anatomical distribution, adipose tissue can be classified in different types. In HealthyFat, we aim to decipher important novel mechanisms of three important fat depots, dorsal subcutaneous adipose tissue (DSAT), visceral adipose tissue (VAT), and dermal adipose tissue (dAT) and their role in metabolic inflammation, skeletal deformities, and wound healing capacity which are major contributors to A. salmon health and disease. HealthyFat will provide knowledge about different adipose tissue depot development, their heterogeneous composition and distribution, and their main metabolic pathways. The potential effects of cetoleic acid, EPA, DPA, DHA, and Zinc on the modulation of these functions will be assessed. Understanding the relationship between the different adipose depots and how changes in diet composition affect skin strength, wound healing capacity, bone tissue repair, and metabolic inflammation are important information for the aquaculture to secure fish production while mantaining fish health and welfare.

Regional adipose tissue depots in Atlantic salmon and their importance to fish health

Hovedmålsettingen i PreVio er å bidra med oppdatert empirisk kunnskap om utvikling av voldsrisiko over tid og identifisere innsatsområder der samarbeidet mellom spesialisthelsetjeneste, politi, og kriminalomsorg kan styrkes for bedre forebygging av vold blant alvorlig psykisk syke mennesker. Prosjektet er et samarbeid mellom Oslo universitetssykehus, Universitetet i Oslo, Folkehelseinstituttet, Oslo politidistrikt og Kriminalomsorgen.

Vold utøvd av personer med alvorlig psykisk lidelse representerer en delt utfordring og et felles ansvar for politi, kriminalomsorg og spesialisthelsetjeneste. Alle disse aktørene har de siste årene meldt om økende utfordringer knyttet til personer med psykisk lidelse og voldspotensiale.  Til sammen har det dannet det seg et bilde av en samfunnsutfordring som vokser i omfang. Den kunnskapsmessige utfordringen er at vi vet lite om årsakene til en slik utvikling. Til det trenger vi pålitelige empiriske data som kan belyse forløp over tid. Vi trenger å undersøke kriminalitetsutvikling og sykdomsutvikling over tid, slik at vi kan avdekke sammenhenger mellom forløpene og hvordan de påvirkes av f eks sentrale lovendringer.  
 
I PreVio benytter vi en flerfaglig mixed-method tilnærming der kvantitative data fra to eksisterende datasett, henholdsvis en registerkobling (n ˜ 8 mill) og et klinisk forskningsprosjekt om vold ved alvorlige psykiske lidelser (n ˜ 200), kombineres med en visuell metode for kvalitativ utforsking av enkeltsaker. Forskerne og praksisfeltenes fagpersoner jobber aktivt sammen for å utvikle kunnskap som svarer på praksisfeltenes kunnskapsbehov. Prosjektet består av forskere innenfor kriminologi, jus og psykiatrisk epidemiologi, og representanter for de involverte praksisfeltene, inkludert klinikere med lang erfaring i behandling av pasienter med alvorlig psykisk lidelse og voldsproblematikk.

Violent crime committed by persons with severe mental illness represent an area of shared responsibility between the criminal justice system and the health services, with interconnected challenges: fatal incidents perpetrated by persons with  a known history of mental illness and violence, a considerable growth in police call outs to violent incidents involving persons with mental disorders, an increased number of patients convicted to involuntary mental health care, and reports from prisons unable to adequately care for mentally ill inmates. This has sparked both public concern and professional warnings about shortcomings in system coordination and cooperation. The reasons behind this disturbing development remain speculative/largely unknown. The current project aims to meet this knowledge need. 

We propose a feasible cross-disciplinary mixed-methods study of the development and prevention of violent crime among persons with serious mental illness (PreVio) as a collaborative project involving the police, the correctional service and the mental health services. We will use quantitative data from two existing datasets including 1. a population-wide registry linkage with information on severe mental illness, violent crime and sociodemographic factors ( ForenPsych, N ˜8 mill) and 2. psychological characteristics and individual risk and protective factors from violent offenders with or without psychosis (sTOP n˜200), to map developmental trajectories and risk factors both on the societal and individual level. We will then use a novel approach with qualitative explorations of single cases to identify critical time points and areas for targeted preventive interventions.
Through multidisciplinary research by experts in epidemiology, forensic and clinical psychiatry, criminology, sociology, and law, in close and continuous cooperation with experienced practitioners in the field, the results can impact both crime prevention and the promotion of community safety.

Understanding and preventing violence in high risk individuals– a mixed-methods approach (PreVio)

I produksjon av atlanterhavslaks utgjør fôr mer enn 50% av produksjonskostnadene og mer enn 70% av karbonavtrykket. Genetisk forbedring av fôreffektivitet og ressurseffektivitet er derfor den «hellige gral» for både akvakultur og husdyrproduksjon. Skiftet til et fôr med mer bærekraftige plantebaserte ingredienser i dietten til Atlanterhavslaks har redusert nivået av langkjedede Omega-3-fettsyrer som EPA og DHA. Genetisk forbedring av laksens fôreffektivitet og EPA og DHA innhold er mulig, og derfor en attraktiv måte og redusere fôrkostnader og karbonavtrykk, samtidig som man sikrer et næringsrikt produkt og optimal utnyttelse av begrensede ressurser. En betydelig barriere har vært å få gode fenotyper for fôropptak, lipid innhold og EPA- og DHA-innhold i tusenvis av beslektede laks, som er nødvendig for et godt avlsprogram. I DigiFishent vil vi tilpasse og utvikle nye digitale fenotyperingsmetoder for disse egenskapene som strekker seg fra ferskvannet til høstingsfasen i produksjon av Atlanterhavslaks og kombinere disse med genomiske seleksjonsverktøy. DigiFishent prosjektet består av pilot studier for å optimalisere en ny metode for å måle fôropptak på individnivå basert på metallsporstoffer i fôret. Vi vil utføre to vekstforsøk på forskjellige genetiske grupper av Atlanterhavslaks gjennom vekst perioden i ferskvann og saltvann hvor vi måler fôropptak, lipid innhold og vekst. I høstingsfasen vil EPA og DHA innhold også måles. Det genetiske potensialet til alle disse egenskapene, samt sammenhengen mellom egenskapene, vil bli estimert ved å kombinere de nye fenotypene med genomisk informasjon og banebrytende genomiske modeller.

Genetic Improvement of feed efficiency and resource efficiency is the ‘holy grail’ of aquaculture and livestock production. In Atlantic salmon, feed accounts for more than 50% of the production cost and more than 70% of the carbon footprint. Whilst, omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA are limited and declining resources in the feed, which affects their content in the edible salmon fillet. There is evidence that genetic improvement of feed efficiency and EPA and DHA content is possible, and is thus an attractive way to reduce feed cost and the carbon foot print, whilst ensuring a nutritious product and optimal uses of limited resources. A significant barrier has been acquiring phenotypes for feed intake, lipid content and EPA and DHA content in thousands of related Atlantic salmon needed for genetic improvement. In DigiFishent we will adapt and develop novel digital phenotyping methods for these phenotypes spanning the freshwater to harvest phase of Atlantic salmon production and combine these with genomic selection tools to fill knowledge gaps on the genetics of improved feed and resource efficiency in Norwegian salmon. 
DigiFishent consists of pilot studies to optimize a new method of recording individual feed intake based on metal tracers in the feed. Two growth trials will be conducted on genetic cohorts of Atlantic salmon through the freshwater and saltwater growth phases during which feed intake, lipid content and growth will be recorded. At harvest phase the EPA and DHA content will also be recorded. The genetic potential of all these traits and their interrelatedness will be determined by combining the novel phenotypes with genomic information and cutting edge genomic models. Ultimately filling knowledge gaps and guiding the optimal inclusion of feed efficiency and reource efficiency into Norwegian salmon breeding programmes.

Disentangling the environmental drivers of soil microbial community composition and function in a sub-alpine grassland network

Return of organic wastes to soils is a step towards more closed nutrient cycles, greater sustainability and reduced environmental loads. Because of the enormously variation of availability of plant nutrient as nitrogen and phosphorus between different org anic waste types, there is a great demand for increased knowledge about the potential nitrogen fertilization effects and plant availability of P. In this research programme special emphasis will be made on phosphorus in different organic waste types. The studies will include effects of different treatments on P sorption and availability, and potential for leaching and loss to water bodies. Studies on influence of organic waste of different origin on selected soil quality indicators will also be performed.  The results from experimental studies will be used for resource assessment of nitrogen and phosphorus recycling. The outcome of the research programme will be relevant for producers and users of organic waste, and may lead differentiated recommendations for use of organic waste and suggestions for revision of regulations for such use.
