Inter-comparison of NorESM and NEMO in idealized and coupled simulations

Awarded: NOK 97,999

Climate modeling is the only tool to forecast future climate change. However, there is always significant spread and biases between different climate models with respect to various measures such as Atlantic meridional overturning strength, sea surface temperature. These differences are most of the time due to different modeling approaches such as numerical schemes and/or physical parameterizations. In this project, I am planning to visit L?Ocean, Paris France which is one of the biggest climate centers in Europe. Specifically, together we will conduct numerical experiments and compare results between Norwegian Earth System Model (NorESM, Bentsen et al, 2012) ocean component and Nucleus for European Modelling of the Ocean (NEMO, Madec et al, 2008). We will work on both idealized and ocean+sea-ice coupled model setups to compare NorESM and NEMO ocean models. This project will help us to improve process representations in NorESM and enable more realistic estimate of uncertainties in climate simulations.
