Alternative title: KIFEE 2016-2018

Awarded: NOK 4.0 mill.

The Kyoto International Forum for Energy and Environment (KIFEE) is a Japan-Norway research network developed on the basis of the Kyoto Protocol and the Japan-Norway Bilateral Agreement on Technological Cooperation (2004). KIFEE specifically addresses the sustainability issue through four targeted areas: - Electrolysis and advanced inorganic materials - Process engineering - Advanced biological materials - Education for sustainable development KIFEE is managed by two parallel leader groups in Japan (LG-J, see 1.1.e.) and Norway (LG-N), respectively. LG-J has representatives from 5 major (highly ranked) universities and one research institute (AIST) in Japan, and several other Japanese universities and institutes are actively participating in the network. LG-N has representatives from three universities and two research institutes in Norway. The KIFEE network also includes industrial partners in both countries. New partners joined the project in 2018, incl.. University of Tokyo, Nagoya Institute of Technology, NIMS and Ehime University. Secondly, centres (SFF, SFI, FME) and strategic areas were associated with KIFFE. Thirdly, KIFEE increased the mobility within research and education related to the four target areas of KIFEE, collectively targeting the sustainability issue. KIFEE-9 was held in Kyoto 7-10 March, with ca. 50 Norwegian participants and about 150 Japanese. KIFEE-10 was organised at Hurtigruten with ca. 55 Norwegian and 40 Japanese participants. Both symposia were successful. A key development now implemented are the 7 KIFEE-professor grants. (https://www.ntnu.edu/web/kifee/kifee-professors-2016-2018). The Mobility programme (https://www.ntnu.edu/web/kifee/mobility-grants-2016-2018) eis well established, and has resulted in mobility both ways. The web pages will be updated with names, institutions and dates soon.

Expansion of the network to include important academic and industrial partners Established student internships in Japanese industry Mobility and exchange of students (master and PhD): 12 Mobility and exchange of researchers: 6 Involved Japanese professors from partner institutions as visiting professors in Norway (teaching in master and PhD courses and giving seminars for students) Successfully arranged KIFEE symposia in March 2017 and October 2018, with 4 thematic (parallell) workshops Arranged education plenary sessions More than 30 joint publications with peer review Involved industry in symposia and workshops, resulting also in new collaborations between industries
