PlagPART: A Norwegian-Russian-Chinese research and training network on the study of plague

Alternative title: PlagPART: Et norsk-russisk-kinesisk forsknings- og utdanningsnettverk på studiet av pesten

Awarded: NOK 51,005

The main focus of PlagPART has been to extend collaboration between the CEES/UiO and research and educational institutions in China and Russia (as well as Mongolia, Georgia and Azerbaijan) through PhD students, researchers and scholars, all mutually connected by their research on plague. Our main partners are Beijing Normal University and Tsinghua University in China, and Lomonosov Moscow State University in Russia, together with five other high-quality associated partners. The Chinese university Zhejiang University was originally a partner, but canceled their participation due to their changed priorities. Researchers from CEES have as, direct or indirect, result of PlagPART published, or in the process of doing so, several joint publications (on plague and related topics). A main objective of the project is to contribute to the training of a new generation of interdisciplinary scientists within an international setting of top international research. This has connected the UiO with strategically placed research and education centers in China and Russia (amongst others).

This will connect the University of Oslo with strategically placed research and education centers in China and Russia (and other countries). To achieve our objectives, PlagPART is organized into four main work packages. WPI and WPII dealing with PhD student and researcher mobility and supervision on an individual level, whereas WPIII addresses joint workshops to achieve plenary meetings and interactions, and WPIV addresses long-term joint course and curriculum development to institutionalize these collaborations to achieve synergy of student training and research. Training listed under WPI-II will be closely linked to ecological, evolutionary and genomics (including ancient DNA) methods currently in use by the CEES team and the expertise in remote sensing, genomics plague natural history and climate ecology pioneered by the various partners. The workshops listed under WPIII will be closely linked to ongoing work within the network, and used to coordinate joint research, supervision, courses and lectures, forming the basis for the long-term perspectives developed in WPIV. WPIV is anchored in existing agreements between UiO and partner institutions and will be extended by mapping the optimal contributions with
