Nordic CCS Summer School 2015

Awarded: NOK 0.99 mill.

The Nordic CCS Summer School is a one-week intensive course in CO2 capture, transport and storage. The course has a distinct industrial focus ensured by involving lecturers from industry. It will start off with a one-day excursion to the CO2 capture test facilities at the NORCEM cement plant in Brevik, and a visit to the nearby by Yara fertilizer plant in Porsgrunn to view CO2 handling in practise. NORCEM and Yara are the two facilities highlighted in the recent Gassnova report on CCS deployment options in Norway. The classes will cover the complete CCS value chain and address framework issues such as life cycle analysis, financing, HSE, public acceptance, political and legal issues and innovation, This will allow the students to obtain a good understanding of the size and complexity involved with industrial CCS projects as well as the theoretical knowledge of CCS. The course is intended mainly for Ph.D students and young CCS professionals new to the field. The participants will be chosen broadly from all educational and industrial institutions in the Nordic countries and applications from the Baltic will also be considered. An important goal with the course is to develop a Nordic CCS network between the participants, so there is also focus on social events in the evenings in addition to the group work which will bring the participants closer together. The course has a good balance between lectures and group work, and requires a final exam. The students will be divided in groups and challenged with the task of producing a white paper for a Nordic industrial CCS value chain based on emissions from one or more Nordic industrial facilities. During the oral exam the group will present and answer questions regarding their work. They will receive three credit hours upon passing the exam. The total budget proposed is 2.10 Million NOK of which 50% is covered by the organizing partners. The amount requested from Climit is 986 k NOK.
