Musculoskeletal disorders are the most common cause for sick leave and disability pension in Norway and the second greatest cause of disability worldwide. It accounts for 21.3 % of all years lived with disability (YLDs), and the single leading cause of disability worldwide is low back pain, followed by neck pain and osteoarthritis. The burden is substantially higher than previously assessed, which will have important implications for health care systems and underlines the need for development of effective and affordable strategies to respond to the growing burden. The Norwegian NSG (National Co-operation Group on Health Research) has recently acknowledged the enormous and growing burden of musculoskeletal conditions, both in Norway and globally, by establishing a formal research network within the musculoskeletal field, in which FORMI, at Oslo University Hospital, has been appointed the task as network coordinator with representatives from all health regions in Norway. The Norwegian Musculoskeletal Research Network (MUSS) has since 2012 arranged a yearly national research network conference and established a sound ground for collaborative research across different health disciplines. This year we will arrange a high level international meeting in partnership with Global Alliance for Musculoskeletal Health of the Bone and Joint Decade (BJD) and The Norwegian Council for Musculoskeletal Health (NCMH), which will provide a forum that brings together leadership from major professional, scientific and patient organisations relevant to musculoskeletal health from around the globe, key opinion leaders and leadership of the BJD National Action Networks, research networks along with policy makers, including from the WHO and EU.
