The project aims to contribute to increased returns as well as sound investments and production strategies in Norwegian forage production. The background is the overall ambition among the industry partners, farmers' representatives and the funding body to turn the trend of increasing forage costs in absolute terms and relative to concentrate feeding. An analytical platform that allows and conducts integrated analyses and comparisons of presently available and innovated production chains from soil tillage to feeding out will be developed. The Irish Grange Feed Cost Model is meant to be the core of this platform. A substantial part of the project will be research with the objective to develop principles, technology and methods that may contribute to close the gap between potential and realized net yields in forage production. Experiments as well as meta-analyses of available data are planned that specifically address innovations in grassland renovation and renewal, crop composition and preservation techniques. The project will be concluded by scenario analyses of whole production systems, where estimated animal responses to forage qualities and types are included. They shall cover a representative sampling of operating structure, types of livestock under different soils and climatic conditions. The industry partners will take actively part in this work as well as in dissemination activities. It is an important goal in the project to expand knowledge and promote enthusiasm for forage production and utilization among farmers and advisory services. We anticipate that the analytical platform and the data and information gathered will be a resource and basis for development of decision support models. The improved agronomic practises and the consciousness and knowledge of where costs accumulate, and can be reduced, will lead to more sustainable ruminant productions in Norway.
