Opprinnelsestesting av fiskemel

Alternative title: Authenticity testing of fishmeal

Awarded: NOK 2.7 mill.

The project was based on an existing service provided by ORIVO AS to producers of omega-3 fish oils where the origin of the oil can be traced through a laboratory test. The service is sold as a certification for honest producers and brand owners who wish to document the authenticity of their products. A pre-project performed in 2015 and 2016 on salmon meal had showed that it could be feasible to extract the fat fraction from the fishmeal and use a modified version of the laboratory test (based on 13C NMR) to document the authenticity of fishmeal. The main goal of the new research project was therefore to evaluate the use of 13C NMR lipid profiling for authentication of species and geographical origin of different types of fishmeal. In addition, investigation of the latest generation of DNA-based analyses for the same purposes was included in the project. Throughout the project period, around 1300 samples of fishmeal and fish oil have been collected from numerous regions and species. The main focus has been on salmon, anchovy and sardines from respectively Norway/Chile, Peru and Morocco. This sample collection has been crucial to be able to be able to establish a database of reference samples for the NMR-part of the project, as well as for having reference samples for the DNA analyses. In addition, much time has been spent gathering market information about shipment routes of fishmeal in order to understand how the service to be developed can bring value to the industry. This has resulted in hypothesis that the place in the value chain where adulteration is most likely to take place is at the level of the traders, who buy several different ingredients from producers, store them in warehouses and sell them to the producers of finished products such as pet food. In the warehouses, undeclared mixing of raw materials can take place, deliberate or by accident. Therefore, it was concluded that the players most interested in a laboratory test to document the authenticity of fishmeal would be either producers of the fishmeal, or the producers of the finished products. Overall, the results from the NMR-related work showed that accurate classification of meal extracts is generally more challenging than for marine oils. For some categories, such as the salmonoid species, the accuracy of the technology is sufficient, but for others further development is needed. Such development was, however, outside the scope of this project. The results from the DNA-based analyses showed that it is possible to develop a test which accurately can quantify a single species in a fishmeal mixture, and this has been accomplished for a few selected species. Metabarcoding showed promising results as a tool to detect which species are present or not present in more complex mixtures like feed products.
