Feasibility study for commercialising a Salmon and Kingfish Land-Based Aquaculture System

Awarded: NOK 39,999

The overall aim of the envisaged SAKLAS project is to adapt and demonstrate on a large-scale a disruptive, cost-effective and sustainable Land-based Recirculating Aquaculture System [RAS] for farming two high-value fish species, Atlantic Salmon [AS] and Yellowtail Kingfish [YK], from TRL7 to TRL9, thus making it ready for rapid post-project commercialisation. The SAKLAS solution combines a new patent coupled with targeted operations initiatives to solve critical production issues related to RAS production. This will allow us to bring more efficient production designs and best practices to the EU market, thus contributing to unlocking a cost-effective method for sustainable fish production, without further depleting marine habitats and resources. SAKLAS will reduce the operational and technical barriers that have held back expansion, offering profit margins of between 30-40%. Furthermore, we will reduce the Weighted Average Cost of Capital [WACC] and the perceived risk associated with this disruptive production method. Consequently, we will be in a privileged situation to overcome key structural barriers to financing future projects in the EU and to bring the SAKLAS concept into the mainstream of the aquaculture industry. In the proposed feasibility study, we will conduct a range of market-oriented activities, including a detailed market analysis, competitor and cost analysis, marketing planning, and an analysis of revenue streams and investigate a range of pricing models for our product. Our market analysis will cover EU and the US. We will also conduct a detailed stakeholder analysis and close agreements with appropriate piloting partners for our market maturation activities as well as surveying and ensuring full compliance with relevant standards and regulations. We will also update our current freedom-to-operate analysis and IPR strategy.
